Following other Republicans in counties across the commonwealth, Greene County’s Republican commitee has censured Pennsylvania U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey for voting to convict former President Donald Trump at the conclusion of Trump’s second impeachment trial last week.
The censure resolution says Toomey, a Republican, did not “fairly represent the views and wishes of his constituents.” It also alleges that Toomey “poisoned the well in public statements that he made in support of the dubious Pennsylvania election process” in television interviews before the election was certified.
Multiple lawsuits seeking to overturn the November presidential election, in Pennsylvania and other swing states, were rejected by state and federal courts, and no evidence of widespread voter fraud ever surfaced.
After voting to convict Trump, Toomey said he was aware that many Republicans would disagree with him, but he found Trump’s behavior leading to the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol “unacceptable.”
