An Eighty Four woman died Thursday morning after a wrong-way driver struck her vehicle on Interstate 70 in Washington.

Joscelyn Vith, 32, was taken to UPMC-Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh, where she later died from injuries suffered in the 2:10 a.m. crash that occurred between the exits for Jefferson Avenue and Interstate 79 North.

Charged in connection with the crash was Leandre Latima Woods, 48, of 33 Maple St., North Bethlehem Township. Woods was driving a pickup truck westbound in the eastbound lanes, according to court documents.

Woods fled the scene on foot and later turned himself in to state police. He is charged with felonies of homicide by vehicle, homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, accidents involving death or personal injury and accidents involving death or injury while not licensed.

A witness told police he was driving in the center lane when he saw the headlights of Woods’ vehicle approaching in the left lane. The witness stopped to help, and saw Woods walking toward the I-70 eastbound on-ramp.

Woods arrived at the state police barracks at 9:30 a.m. Court documents said his breath smelled of alcohol, and he told troopers he was sorry.

Woods gave police conflicting stories about his whereabouts prior to the crash, according to the complaint. He claimed to have been at a friend’s house and then a bar in Washington, but also said he had been at the same bar for four hours prior to meeting his friend.

Woods said he fell asleep while driving and woke up lying in the road next to his burning truck, the complaint states. He said he knew he hit someone and left the scene because he was scared, police said.

Court records indicate that Woods has multiple DUI convictions and that his license had been suspended as of Aug. 24, 2021.

District Judge Kelly Stewart sent Woods to the Washington County jail and denied him bond. He is due to appear before Stewart at 1 p.m. March 3.
