Greene County commissioners contribute toward demolition of former school
The Greene County commissioners committed funds toward the demolition of the former Crucible Elementary School.
Commissioners Blair Zimmerman and Betsy McClure voted to contribute $23,770.50 to the Crucible Volunteer Fire Department to assist with the demolition during their Thursday meeting. Commissioner Mike Belding did not attend the meeting.
Chief Clerk Jeff Marshall said the site is considered to be a hazard.
“It’s taken a long time to get to this,” Zimmerman said.
Marshall said the school, which is owned by the fire department, has been closed for a number of years. Efforts to tear down the building started a couple of years ago, but the project ran into some regulatory issues that had to be dealt with before the demolition could continue.
Along with the county’s contribution, Cumberland Township will contribute $23,770, and the fire department will contribute $10,781, for a total cost of $58,322.50.
The county’s share comes from Act 13 funds.
In other business, the commissioners voted to approve the execution of the 2022 HAVA Grant Agreement Form from the Pennsylvania Department of State. The $2,756.15 grant goes toward enhancing election technology and making election security improvements.
