The demolition of three smoke stacks at the now-defunct Hatfield Ferry’s Power Station has been postponed.

“It’s still going to occur, but not on Saturday,” FirstEnergy spokesman Todd Meyers said Wednesday afternoon.

Meyers said he learned of the delay earlier in the day, but was uncertain about the reason, and did not know a new date for the demolition.

Bringing down the three stacks is part of FirstEnergy’s plans to open up the hundreds of acres upon which the power plant stood for economic development.

The company decommissioned the Monongahela Township plant in October 2013. Meyers said work to tear down the plant began in February. The Saturday demolition was to include two stacks that are more than 700 feet tall, and a single stack that is about 540 feet tall.

Meyers said FirstEnergy plans to demolish two hyperbolic cooling towers early next year, and the boiler house in the spring.

If all goes according to plan, by 2024 the 236-acre tract of land will be a grassy field for future economic development.

There are currently no plans for the property once the power plant is demolished, Meyers said previously.
