The Greene County commissioners approved one grant to assist in the renovations of a Waynesburg University building, and several more for various other improvements within the county’s borders.

On Thursday, commissioners approved a $1 million contract between the state and the county for a Redevelopment Assistance Capital Project Grant. The funding will go toward improvements at the school’s Stewart Hall. The five-story building houses the university’s departments of biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics and nursing. It also contains the William P. Snyder Jr. Lecture Hall, and faculty and student research laboratories.

In addition, upon approval from the Greene County Conservation District Board, commissioners approved funding from the Agriculture Conservation Assistance Program (ACAP) in the amount of $147,741 to Cree Farms for a number of improvements, including the installation of a roof runoff structure, animal trails and walkways, and two underground outlets.

The commissioners also noted that more than 50 landowners applied for the grants through Greene County’s Reinvestment in Agriculture: Cost-Share Enhancement (GRACE) program. The board awarded $152,853 for lime and fertilizer applications, water improvements, exclusionary fencing, agriculture stream crossings and forest management development and practice.

“The GRACE program is unique to Greene County and was formed to receive Act 13 funding to improve our waters and streams,” said Commissioner Chairman Mike Belding.
