National Pro Bono Week begins Oct. 22, kicking off an important week in the legal community that celebrates the vital, life-changing services that free or reduced-fee legal assistance provides to communities all across the nation.

This year is no different as law firms and legal aid organizations across the Pennsylvania celebrate with events and clinics under this year’s theme of “Voices of Democracy: Ensuring Justice for All.”

To join in the celebrations for Pro Bono Week, Summit Legal Aid, which serves as Washington County’s nonprofit legal aid organization, and volunteers from the Washington County Bar Association will be offering a Pop-Up Community Legal Clinic about child custody and child support on Oct. 27. The Custody Clinic will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at the Washington Crown Center mall at 1500 W. Chestnut St. near Washington.

“We are excited to partner with Summit Legal Aid on this important project, particularly as part of our Bar Foundation’s charitable mission is to support pro bono efforts and public information and educational initiatives,” Bar Association Executive Director Kathy Sabol said.

“We deeply appreciate the partnership between the Bar Association and our PAI & Pro Bono Manager to address these important issues for parents and guardians at no cost,” said Brian Gorman, executive director for Summit Legal Aid. “Ultimately, understanding and following child custody and support laws benefits our local children.”

From noon to 1 p.m., a free “Custody Basics” presentation will be given by Family Law attorney Kristen Anders Bojarski and attorney David Wolf of Wolf, Wagers & Wolf. From 1 to 4 p.m., the clinic will offer free 30-minute consultations with volunteer attorneys, who will review cases and provide general legal advice to income-qualified individuals.

Pre-registration to meet with an attorney is strongly encouraged. To register, go online to www.summitlegal.org/legal-clinic-sign-up or call 1-800-846-0871 to speak with Summit Legal Aid’s intake team.

Summit Legal Aid is funded in-part by Legal Services Corporation, the largest funder of legal aid in the nation. This project is made possible by the PAI Program funded by LSC, Meghann E Mikluscak-Hewitt, Esquire, the PAI & Pro Bono Manager of Summit Legal Aid, and volunteers of the Washington County Bar Association.
