A Jefferson Hills man was shot by police after he allegedly fired a gun multiple times into a Monongahela bar.

Jonathan Toth, 49, faces multiple charges of attempted homicide after the incident early Saturday morning at Main Street Tavern.

State police said that Toth was at the 225 Main St. bar at about 12:30 a.m. with his wife, when they got into an argument with other patrons. Toth allegedly threatened to return with a knife while leaving with his wife.

Police said not long after, Toth returned alone, armed with a .22 caliber rifle and fired a single round into the rear window of a parked pickup truck. He then fired approximately four rounds into the back door of Main Street Tavern. Police said the bullets traveled through the door and damaged walls inside the bar. There were about eight people inside.

A Monongahela police officer, who police did not identify, fired one round at Toth as he tried to flee in his vehicle. The bullet struck him on the right side of his body, according to state police.

Toth continued driving but eventually stopped along State Route 136 in Forward Township. He was taken to an unspecified hospital for treatment.

Toth faces seven charges of attempted homicide, as well as felony charges of aggravated assault, and discharging a firearm into an occupied structure.

He has not been arraigned on the charges, and police did not provide an update on Toth’s current condition.
