Peters Township council unanimously approved an ordinance Monday night that raises next year’s garbage collection rates by about 27%.

Township officials signaled that a hike was coming in July, when council approved a new four-year contract with Waste Management. Paul Lauer, the township manager, explained at the time how higher prices will also come with additional restrictions on how much garbage the company will take.

The ordinance passed at Monday’s meeting raises the fee for curb collection from $70 per quarter to $100 per quarter.

“That’s a $10 increase per month for garbage and recycling collection,” Lauer said.

The rate for rear yard collection will also go up from $88 to $150. The rate increases will go into effect Jan. 1.

“This kind of reflects that there is a tremendous increase in the rate in what is being charged to the township for that collection service,” Lauer said.

With the new contract, Peters will pay $28.43 per month per customer. Previously, it was $22.39 per month.

Waste Management will no longer take individual bags of garbage. Peters residents will be limited to one bin for garbage and one for recycling. Additional bins can be obtained for $100 per year per bin.

Residents will also be more limited in how they can dispose of larger items such as furniture. Next year they will be limited to two large items per month, rather than two each week. Waste Management will pick up bulky items for one week each month.
