The Washington County Sheriff Office and South Strabane Township Police Department engaged in a friendly competition on Nov. 22 to raise money for the local chapter of The Salvation Army.

The Battle of the Badges saw members of both departments ringing bells and collecting donations for The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign.

Members of the sheriff’s office staked out a space at Washington Giant Eagle, while South Strabane police manned the kettle at Sam’s Club.

South Strabane police won the battle, edging out the sheriff’s office $593.05 to $527.37.

“We were bummed, but it all goes to a good cause and the community wins,” said sheriff’s Deputy Elizabeth Davidson.

She said the office relies on community partnerships, including The Salvation Army, and the department wanted to reciprocate. South Strabane police were up for the competition.

“We are blessed to have such a great community and wonderful partnership with agencies and departments. The officers had a blast at this event,” said Davidson. “The community was very supportive at both stores.”

The funds volunteers raise as Salvation Army bell ringers makes a year-round impact in the local community through social services assistance, children’s programs, disaster relief, and more.

The Washington Salvation Army’s goal is to raise $45,000.
