A landslide developed beside Route 40 in Laboratory on Thursday, swallowing up a large hillside and briefly closing one lane of the highway as emergency responders were initially concerned it could widen.

South Strabane Township firefighters said they were alerted to the situation about 1:30 p.m. Thursday when the landslide was first noticed near the Laboratory interchange to Interstate 79.

While one lane of Route 40 was initially closed, it eventually reopened Friday morning, although the shoulder remained blocked off from motorists due to being so close to the affected area.

South Strabane firefighters said various agencies and utilities were alerted about the situation, and they’re continuing to monitor the hillside for any additional movement.
