A Washington man who was arrested last week in the assault of a woman now stands accused of sexually assaulting her.

William Edwards, 29, was charged by Washington police on April 6 with aggravated assault and strangulation. The department filed additional charges Wednesday after the alleged victim provided more details about the incident.

According to the criminal complaint, the woman told police the morning of April 6 that Edwards had choked her during an argument. Police observed broken blood vessels on her neck and collar bone. Police wrote in the complaint that she had bruises on her arms, legs and torso.

After speaking with police she went to Washington Hospital for treatment and had a rape kit done. In another interview with police, she said she did not initially report the sexual assault because she did not want to go into detail.

Court records state that the woman described Edwards repeatedly raping and assaulting her over a six-hour period until she was able to flee the apartment.

Edwards now faces felony charges of rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, sexual assault and aggravated indecent assault.

He was arraigned on the new charges Wednesday afternoon before District Judge Kelly Stewart, who denied bond. Edwards was initially incarcerated in the Washington County jail on $100,000 bond.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. April 24.
