Ron Gordon, a local gospel and folk singer and pianist, will give a performance at Citizens Library at 6 p.m. on May 15.

Gordon, who also plays guitar and harmonica, will be accompanied on some songs by his wife, Mary, a flutist. She also plans to recite original poetry.

While most of the East Washington couple’s music is related to the Gospel, Gordon also performs folk tunes from artists such as “Peter, Paul and Mary” and James Taylor.

The couple prefers music that encourages people and has played numerous venues in the area.

Gordon, who is self-taught, has recorded three albums of his music. He explained he has the gift of prophecy, and when God speaks to him, he can write the music and words down.

But in addition to the gospel music, Gordon can play boogie-woogie music and blues on the piano and plans to share that as well.

Gordon, who works as a piano tuner and repairman, taught himself the craft 41 years ago by purchasing an upright piano and taking a study course. He eventually sold the piano to Mary, but two years later, got the piano back when they were married.

Today, he does about 500 piano tunings a year, including instruments at three colleges and for many churches.

In fact, he plans to tune the grand piano in the library’s Cornerstone Room before his performance starts.
