A Belle Vernon man was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital by helicopter following a head-on collision with a tanker truck on Interstate 70 Thursday morning.

According to state police, the accident occurred at about 2:08 a.m. near the 13 mile marker in North Franklin Township.

Eric Joseph, 48, of Riviera Beach, Fla., lost control of his tanker truck while headed east on I-70. Police said his vehicle crossed the grass median and crashed into a car operated by Lewis Stiltner, 44.

Stiltner was flown from the crash scene to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital with an unspecified injury. Joseph was uninjured, according to police.

The accident shut down westbound lanes of I-70 for several hours. The state Department of Transportation issued a press release Thursday stating that I-70 West will be restricted to a single lane between the Chestnut Street and Taylorstown exits for cleanup.

The restriction is expected to be in place through Friday.
