Washington County Director of Veteran Affairs Dr. Bobbi Cumpston was recently appointed by Gov. Josh Shapiro to the advisory council for the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Veterans Home.
“I am honored to receive this appointment to the Advisory Council to help support our veterans and their families,” Cumpston said. “It is a continuation of my military service and provides an opportunity to ensure our veterans receive the best care.”
Cumpston took the oath from President Judge Gary Gilman on Wednesday morning at the Washington County Courthouse, and she will assume her duties immediately.
Each state veterans home is overseen by an advisory council consisting of 15 members and the adjutant general. Each home’s advisory council advises the adjutant general as to the management, operation and the adequacy of facilities and services at their respective homes.
The Bureau of Veterans Homes operates six long-term care facilities across the state providing services to qualified veterans and their spouses. State veterans’ homes provide a combination of personal care, skilled nursing and dementia care. In addition to these types of clinical care, the homes provide pharmacy services; physical, occupational, and speech therapy; social services; therapeutic and recreational activities; transportation; barber and beauty services; religious and spiritual activities; and hospice care.
The Pennsylvania Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home is the oldest of the state veterans’ homes in Pennsylvania. It provides a total of 207 beds and delivers personal care, skilled nursing care, and memory care.
Cumpston is a 20-year Army veteran who retired in 2022, and she served on active duty with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. She earned her doctorate in strategic leadership at Regent University. She and her husband, Nevin, are 30-year residents of Washington County.
