Two displaced following South Strabane fire
A man and a woman were displaced Wednesday morning after a fire started in the basement of their South Strabane Township home.
First responders were called to 1499 N. Main St. at 12:10 a.m., according to Jordan Cramer, chief of South Strabane Fire & Emergency Services.
“Our crew got there and confirmed everyone was out of the home,” Cramer said. “Both of them were able to escape.”
The frigid temperatures made it difficult to knock down the fire. According to Cramer, it took firefighters two hours to fully extinguish the fire. It spread from the basement through the walls, and into the home’s attic.
The state police fire marshal is investigating to determine what caused the fire.
“Our crews weren’t able to determine anything clearly from their investigations initially,” Cramer said.
Cramer said the American Red Cross was called to assist the residents. Two South Strabane firefighters suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
Fire departments from North Strabane Township, Canton Township, Chartiers Township, Washington, Peters Township and North Franklin Township also responded. Crews were assisted by the state Department of Transportation, South Strabane Public Works and Ambulance and Chair.
