Washington police arrested a city man Wednesday night after he was accused of starting a fire on the porch of his apartment building.

William Gary Reese, 56, faces felony charges of arson and risking catastrophe. According to the criminal complaint, police were called to his home at 649 Broad St. at about 10:20 p.m.

A neighbor told police that Reese had asked him to turn up the heat to warm up the whole building. Shortly after he saw the front porch was on fire.

Reese texted his neighbor shortly after 10:30 p.m., “Now you wish you’d done what have been, a good neighbor, LMFAO,” according to police.

Police observed burn marks on the porch. A doorbell camera from a neighboring home captured a person matching Reese’s description starting the fire.

Reese was arraigned Thursday morning before District Judge Louis McQuillan, who sent him to the Washington County jail on $75,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. Jan. 31.
