Driver flown to Pittsburgh following Interstate 70 crash in South Strabane
A two-vehicle accident involving a tractor-trailer and SUV closed Interstate 70 westbound Tuesday morning and resulted in one of the drivers being flown to Pittsburgh for medical treatment.
The accident occurred near mile marker 21 in South Strabane Township shortly before 9 a.m. According to Jordan Cramer, chief of South Strabane Department of Fire and Emergency Services, an SUV crashed into the rear of the tractor-trailer.
It took crews about 20 minutes to free the driver from the vehicle, which was stuck underneath the trailer. Two children were in the rear seat, but were removed quickly.
According to the fire department, the children were taken by ambulance to UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. The driver was flown to Allegheny General Hospital after a helicopter landed on the westbound lanes of I-70.
The identity of the driver was not immediately available.
I-70 westbound lanes were closed for about two and a half hours while emergency personnel cleared the wreckage.
Also responding to the scene were North Strabane Fire Department, Ambulance and Chair, state police and the state Department of Transportation.
