A fire that broke out at a Monessen business Sunday night is being investigated as suspicious, according to the city’s fire chief.

Chief Delmar Hepple said crews were called to the 6 Deuce Fit gym at 483 Motheral Ave. shortly after 10:45 p.m. Smoke and flames were showing from the roof, but Hepple said they were able to knock down the fire quickly.

“It’s not a very big building,” Hepple said.

The state police fire marshal is investigating the fire as suspicious. Hepple said the fire originated near a doorway, but declined to offer additional details.

According to Hepple, another investigator is going to examine the structure on Friday.

One firefighter was injured with a neck sprain and was taken by ambulance to Penn Highlands Mon Valley Hospital. Hepple said the firefighter is back at work.

Also responding to the fire were fire departments from North Belle Vernon, Washington Township, Charleroi and Carroll Township.
