A new Sheetz location is coming to Chartiers Township.
Work began recently on developing a new store for the gas-convenience store chain at 650 Pike St., near the Interstate 79 on- and off-ramps in Meadow Lands.
Chartiers Township Manager Jodi Noble said the project has been a long time coming, as the township originally approved the business in October 2022, but has been held up as Sheetz worked through obtaining the necessary clearances.
“They needed some permits from the DEP (Department of Environmental Protection) and FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) because of the proximity to (Chartiers Creek),” Noble said. “That’s what they were working through and waiting for.”
A spokesperson for Sheetz did not respond to emailed questions.
Sheetz was founded by Bob Sheetz and opened its first store in Altoona in 1952, according to the company’s website. Its corporate headquarters remain in Altoona, but the business has grown to more than 700 stores in six states.
The new location will put many Washington County residents in closer proximity to Sheetz’s popular MTO (made-to-order) food menu. Sheetz makes its food available 24/7, with customers able to make in-store orders at touch-screen kiosks. Customers are also able to order through the Sheetz mobile app.
Work began at the site last month after Sheetz received demolition permits to raze two houses on the property, according to Noble.
Sheetz expects to open the new store later this year.
“They have told us this year, by the end of summer,” Noble said.
