A spark from Fourth of July fireworks started a fire in a city of Washington home.

Firefighter Andrew Newman of the Washington Fire Department said the department responded to a home on Broad Street around midnight.

“Dispatch had sent us in under the impression that it was a door on fire,” Newman explained. “By the time we had arrived, it appeared it was the entire front of the house. We don’t know if (the firework) caught a curtain, or a more structural (portion of the house), but it was definitely a firework going off too close to the house.”

Newman said firefighters had the fire under control very quickly. There was no one in the home at the time of the fire, and no one was injured.

However, Newman said the fire caused significant damage to the front half of the house, causing the residents to be displaced. He did say the residents had a place to stay.

Firefighters remained on scene for about an hour to make sure that the blaze did not spread to other portions of the house.

The fire departments from South Strabane and North Strabane assisted Washington firefighters at the scene.
