One person was flown to a hospital after a fire in the city of Washington Saturday evening.
Fire Chief Chris Richer said the call came in at 6:42 p.m. for a fire at a residence at 1200 Fayette St.
“Our crews immediately made access to the residence,” Richer said. “We received information that there was a blind disabled resident trapped inside. Our crews experienced heavy fire right at their entrance point, which they were able to knock down to be able to get to the victim.”
Richer said the female victim, who was not identified, was found face down on the floor in a back bedroom of the residence. Firefighters were able to get her out of the residence and to paramedics.
Richer said she was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital in stable, but critical condition.
“She was stable when she was flown, but anytime you experience those types of burns your condition is critical for the next few days,” Richer said. “She had second-degree burns on her upper extremities. She was legally blind and unable to get out, so she had heavy smoke inhalation and second-degree burns.”
Richer said also rescued were four dogs, three cats, one snake and two iguanas.
Other companies on the scene included South Strabane, North Strabane and Peters Township, which was brought in for its rapid intervention team. Washington’s Ambulance and Chair Service also was on scene.
