The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is going to start work in the next couple of weeks on closing a borehole that opened in June in Millers Run in Cecil Township.

The borehole – a deep, narrow hole made in the ground – has resulted in the stream losing water. According to Lauren Camarda, regional communications manager for the DEP, the borehole is related to the abandoned Montour No. 2 Mine that last operated in 1914.

“At this point, sediment in the stream going into the abandoned mine workings will temporarily block the opening, but the hole continues to reopen, resulting in periods of stream flow and then more water loss,” Camarada said in an email message.

She added that the DEP’s Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation is pursuing an emergency project to excavate and pump water away from the opening. From there, the DEP plans on putting a cement-like grout into the mine workings to permanently close off the opening and then restore the stream.

Don Genusso, Cecil’s manager, explained that “the DEP was contacted as soon as the township was made aware of the situation.”

The borehole is located behind the Cecil Township police station on Route 50.
