It might be ho-ho-hot this Saturday, but Santa Claus is coming to town.
The Greene County Historical Society is hosting Christmas in July at the society museum in Waynesburg from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 20.
“We’ll have an ugly T-shirt contest, the Museum’s Brick Oven Concessions, the Frost Fairy truck and a visit from Santa,” said Janis Rohanna, the museum’s executive assistant and events coordinator. “It’s just meant to be fun. We’re putting a summer spin on Christmas and doing something to bring the community together.”
There will be a presentation about novelty Christman songs, said Janis, children’s activities, artisan vendors and other holiday-themed fun.
“In addition to the event related activities and happenings, visitors can enjoy the museum and grounds and see what’s new,” Rohanna said. “We are constantly making improvements and expanding the display areas or changing existing displays, so there is always something new to see.”
Society members are currently restoring 150 windows in the three-story building and have already completed the renovation of the Main Exhibit Hall and General Store with plenty more to do on the list.
The Greene County Museum was once a poor farm or county home. Each of the 52 rooms in the 35,000 square foot home displays artifacts (more than 30,000 in all) from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Rohanna said maintaining the building, built between 1857 and 1887, is expensive. While Christmas in July admission is by donation, the event’s proceeds will go toward the museum and maintenance of the building and grounds.
The museum is located at 918 Rolling Meadows Road, Waynesburg.
