A Washington man charged in a shooting last month had the most serious charges against him dropped after the victims did not appear at Thursday’s preliminary hearing.

Justice Lamar Walden, 29, appeared before District Judge Kelly Stewart. He was also facing felony charges of aggravated assault, prohibited possession of a firearm, and four misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment.

Washington County Assistant District Attorney John Friedmann said the victims did not attend the hearing to testify, despite being subpoenaed.

“It limited the evidence we were able to present,” Friedmann said.

Court documents accuse Walden of firing multiple shots at Charles Paith the evening of May 14 while he was standing outside of his home in the 50 block of Burton Avenue.

According to the criminal complaint, shots were likely fired from an upstairs apartment at 61 Burton.

Stewart dismissed most of the charges, except for the gun charge and one reckless endangerment charge.

Walden is free on $500,000 unsecured bond. Formal arraignment is scheduled for 9 a.m. July 18.
