Cecil Township’s board of supervisors has postponed a public hearing it had scheduled for July 1 on its oil and gas ordinance.

The hearing has been postponed because of revisions that have been made to the ordinance, according to Supervisor Cindy Fisher, and because of the revisions the board would not have been able to meet the advertising requirements in time for the meeting. Fisher would not elaborate on what changes have been made to the proposed ordinance, but did emphasize that the township was still moving forward with it.

The new proposed ordinance has been a bone of contention in the township, with many residents urging the board to institute setbacks that would put well pads 2,500 feet away from homes. Board members have countered that the township cannot put such restrictions in place because it would be zoning the natural gas industry out of the township and invite lawsuits.

The township first instituted an oil and gas ordinance in 2011.

So far, supervisors have had three public hearings on the proposed ordinance to standing-room-only crowds. No date has been announced for the next public hearing.
