California police arrested a Greene County man Monday after he was accused of assaulting an elderly woman and stealing her car.
James Raymond Sickles, 28, of Clarksville, faces felony charges of aggravated assault and robbery.
According to the criminal complaint, police were called at about 12:40 p.m. to the Liberty Tower Highrise, a senior living facility at 520 Liberty St. A female resident told police that she was getting out of her vehicle when Sickles approached her and asked if she needed help.
The woman responded that the man could hold her walker. Instead, he is accused of grabbing the woman and throwing her.
“I’m taking your car,” the suspect said, according to the complaint.
According to the complaint, Sickles nearly hit the victim with her car as he drove away. Police were able to track the vehicle through GPS and determined it was traveling toward Clarksville.
Charging documents state that Sickles crashed the car into a guardrail near Clarksville. He left the scene and went to his stepfather’s house, where he was arrested without incident, according to the complaint.
Sickles also faces misdemeanor charges of simple assault and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
When reached by phone Tuesday, an employee at Liberty Tower confirmed the woman is a resident at the highrise, and said she has been doing well since the incident.
California police did not respond to a phone call seeking additional information.
Sickles was arraigned Monday afternoon before District Judge Josua Kanalis, who sent him to the Washington County jail without bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. July 10.
