Washington County has hired a new human services director.
The county’s salary board unanimously approved the hiring of John Tamiggi during its March 7 meeting to serve in that role beginning next week.
“We are excited to welcome John to our team,” Commissioner Chairman Nick Sherman said in a written statement Tuesday announcing the hiring. “His diverse expertise in government, academia and the nonprofit sector provides a unique perspective to our county’s largest department.”
Tamiggi will be paid an annual salary of $115,000 in the first year, which is a reduction from the $123,510 paid to the director in the previous year, according to the salary board’s agenda.
The Department of Human Services was formed in early 2020 to oversee Aging Services, Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, Early Intervention, Intellectual Disabilities/Autism, Child and Adult Mental Health services, Children and Youth Services, Housing and Homeless Coordination and Veterans Affairs. The full-time director’s position has been vacant since Kimberly Rogers left the office last June after serving in that role since the creation of the new umbrella department.
“Creating the Department of Human Services has been a significant accomplishment of mine as commissioner, and finding the right person to lead us forward was crucial,” said Sherman, who was in his first year as commissioner when the department was formed.
According to county officials, Tamiggi is a lifelong resident of Western Pennsylvania and has held various roles in government and nonprofits, including working at the Internal Revenue Service, spending time as a professor at Point Park University and serving as executive director of Habitat for Humanity Allegheny Valley in New Kensington. Tamiggi received his doctorate from Point Park University.
“John has the necessary education, experience and innovation to take us to the next level,” Sherman said.
Tamiggi will oversee a department that includes four agencies, three units and a housing and homeless coordinator.
