North Strabane Township police charged a man Thursday evening for assaulting his elderly mother following a standoff that lasted several hours and shut down the DeMar Boulevard neighborhood to traffic.
Edward Donald Snarey Jr., 69, of North Strabane, faces misdemeanor charges of simple assault, neglect of a care dependent person, terroristic threats and disorderly conduct.
Police were called to Snarey’s home in the 100 block of Delmar Boulevard about 3 p.m. Thursday following a report to 911 that Snarey “violently grabbed” the arm of 92-year-old Margaret Snarey, his mother, according to the criminal complaint. Margaret Snarey reportedly started bleeding as a result.
When police arrived, Margaret Snarey answered the door, who was “very confused and disoriented.” Officers were able to remove her from the home for medical treatment.
Edward Snarey, however, barricaded himself inside the home, prompting police to call the SWAT team. The standoff lasted until about 8 p.m., when police broke down the door.
Online court records indicate Snarey has yet to be arraigned on the charges.
