Bernice M. Eazes Baker

Bernice M. Eazes Baker, 94, of Washington, died Friday, November 2, 2012, in her daughter’s home in State College.

She was born August 19, 1918, in Rutherfordton, N.C. She was the eldest of two daughters born to the late William and Mamie Carpenter Eazes.

In 1921, her family moved to Washington, where she graduated from Washington High School in 1937. She also attended and graduated from LaSalle School of Cosmetology in Pittsburgh.

On April 17, 1940, she married Boyd Baker, and this union was blessed with three children, Brenda, Josephine and Boyd Jr. Boyd Jr. died in 1950 followed by her husband in 1956.

Mrs. Baker worked in Ethel’s Beauty Salon on Highland Avenue for 15 years. In 1960, she started working as a nurse’s aide in Washington Hospital, where she made many friends and enjoyed helping patients before retiring in 1985.

She was a member of St. Paul AME Church in Washington and belonged to Busy Bee’s Church Club and Just Us Bridge Club for 45 years.

Preceding her in death are her sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Jack Johnson, and a nephew, Michael Johnson.

She leaves a legend of unconditional love to her daughters, Brenda Burgess and Josephine and husband Donald Ferrell; grandsons Donald Arthur, Darrin William and wife Iva and Derik Baker and wife Charmeen; great-grandsons Evan Randolph and Ian Samuel; a great-granddaughter, Sydnee Nicole; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in St. Paul AME Church, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 8. Arrangements are entrusted to Lantz Funeral Home Inc., 121 Ridge Avenue, Washington, PA 15301.
