Richard L. Martin
Richard L. Martin, 85, of West Alexander, Donegal Township, died at 5:50 p.m. Thursday, November 8, 2012, in Washington County Health Center, Chartiers Township, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born December 7, 1926, in Donegal Township, a son of the late James Elmer and Mildred Sutherland Martin. He had resided on the family farm all his life.
Mr. Martin was a 1944 graduate of the former Claysville High School.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, served as a seaman first class aboard the USS LST 372 and was awarded the Pacific and American Theater ribbons and World War II Victory Medal.
Mr. Martin was a member of Claysville American Legion Post 639, Washington Elks Lodge and the former Claysville Grange 1510.
He was an employee of the former Holiday Construction Co. in Washington and was owner/operator of school buses in McGuffey School District from 1961 until 1969. He was last employed as the district magistrate in Donegal Township for 16 years, prior to retiring in 1989.
Mr. Martin and his wife enjoyed ballroom dancing and traveling, as long as his health permitted.
On August 20, 1949, he married Roberta A. Moorehead, who survives.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son, Richard L. Martin Jr., husband of Tammy Martin of West Alexander; two daughters, Gloria, wife of Michael Kovach of West Chester, Ohio, and Janet, wife of Allen Indermuhle of Sardis, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; his extended family, sister-in-law Becky, wife of Dwight Hunter of West Alexander, and brothers-in-law Sonny, husband of Fran Moorehead of Washington, and John Weimer of Morgantown, W.Va.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, is a sister, Ruby Martin Hinds.
He was the last of his immediate family.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 2 p.m., the time of service, Sunday, November 11, in Claysville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ricco Vespa officiating. Interment will follow in West Alexander Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be accorded by representatives of the U.S. Navy and Claysville American Legion Post 639. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Claysville United Methodist Church, 1279 Route 40 West, Box 446, Claysville, PA 15323.
