Alvin W. Berthold, 76, of McDonald, died Wednesday, November 7, 2012, in Country Meadows of South Hills, Bridgeville.

He was born December 31, 1935, in McDonald, a son of the late Adam and Elizabeth Bernhart Berthold.

Mr. Berthold was vice president and treasurer of Drainage and Ground Improvement Inc. in Bridgeville, which later became D.G.I.-Menard, from where he retired in 2005. He began working as a young man at the former L. Levison and Sons clothing store in McDonald. He then was employed by New York State Natural Gas, Rust Engineering Co. and Vibroflotation Foundation Inc., all of Pittsburgh.

He was a member of McDonald Presbyterian Church, where he had served as head usher, assistant treasurer, past treasurer, elder and trustee. He also was a member of the church’s steering committee for the Lighting the Way capital campaign. He also was a member of McDonald Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. Berthold was a volunteer for the McDonald Food Bank and McDonald Meals on Wheels programs.

On November 2, 1968, he married Carol A. Lohman, who survives.

Also surviving are a nephew, Howard J. Berthold of Fredericktown, Ohio; a niece, Candee L. Berthold of Mentor, Ohio; and a sister-in-law, Juanita Moody Berthold of Fort Myers, Fla.

Deceased is a brother, Howard M. Berthold.

Friends were received Sunday in Nation Funeral Home Inc., 220 East Lincoln Avenue, McDonald. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, November, 12, in McDonald Presbyterian Church, Calvary Center, with the Rev. Justin Amsler and the Rev. Sue Petritis officiating. Charles E. Carnahan Sr., 83, of Canonsburg, died Sunday, November 11, 2012, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh.

David E. Carson of Canonsburg passed away Saturday, November 10, 2012.

Retiring in 1999, he taught in Burgettstown School District for 36 years.

Deceased are his father, Dale Carson; his mother, Ida Carson Downey; a sister-in-law, Judy Cunningham; and a brother-in-law, Walter Platter.

Surviving are his loving wife, Linda; two daughters, Lynn Carson Stone and husband Rob of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and Wendy Carson of Harrisburg; four grandchildren, Camden, Chandler, Carson and Ciara Stone; a sister, Doloris Platter of California; a brother, Dale (Eleanor) Carson of Venice, Fla.; his in-laws, Ruth Ann (Robert) Robertory and Albert (Marilyn) Raytek; a brother-in-law, Jim Cunningham; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Antoinette “Toni” “Belle” Checca, 83, of Friendswood, Texas, formerly of Peters Township, died Friday, November 9, 2012, in Emeritus Assisted Living, Friendswood.

She was born September 14, 1929, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Nicholas and Ann Wessel Falce.

Mrs. Checca was married to the late Daniel M. Checca.

She was a member of Mary Queen Catholic Church in Friendswood.

Surviving are a son, Dennis P. Checca of New York; a daughter, Julianne C. Murphy of Texas; four grandchildren, Sean M. Murphy and Daniel X., and James P. and Caitlin A. Checca; a sister, Mary Ellen Vitalie of Bethel Park; a brother, James Falce of San Jose, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Kenneth Clutter, 68, of West Finley, died at 4:30 a.m. Sunday, November 11, 2012, in Washington Hospital.

Mary Ann “Babe” Cranmer, 75, of Canonsburg, went to be with the Lord Friday, November 9, 2012, in Washington Hospital.

She was born in Canonsburg, a daughter of the late Karl and Ann Pashkevich Summers.

She was a member of Central Assembly of God Church in Houston, where she was involved in numerous church groups.

She graduated from Canonsburg Hospital School of Nursing, worked at Canonsburg Hospital and retired from Mayview State Hospital as a registered nurse supervisor.

She will always be remembered for putting her patients first and her kindness, love and philanthropic nature.

Surviving are a son, Joseph C. Cranmer and wife Renee of Franklin; three brothers, John Summers of Washington, Robert Summers of Sharpsburg and Michael Summers and wife Vicky of Long Island, N.Y.; sister Rose Mary O’Korn and husband Frank of McMurray; three grandchildren, Joseph Phillip Cranmer and Michael and Brittany; two nephews, Buck O’Korn and wife Amy and Brian O’Korn and wife Becky; two great-nieces, Abigal Rose and Grace Milan; and a great-nephew, Luke Robert-Frank.

Deceased are two brothers, Carl and Francis Summers, and three sisters, Martha Dean, Helen Stutzman and Betty Lash.

There will be no public visitation. A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 17, in Central Assembly of God Church, Houston. Ruth Kersten Kisow, 94, of Washington, died Friday, November 9, 2012, in her home.

She was born March 20, 1918, in Delmont, a daughter of the late William and Ella Morgan Kersten.

Mrs. Kisow had worked for seven years at Woodville State Hospital and was a homemaker.

She was a member of Central Assembly of God Church, Houston.

Mrs. Kisow enjoyed cooking, crocheting, knitting, China paintings and crafts. She loved polkas, waltzes, Christian music and being with her grandchildren and talking with them.

On August 24, 1943, she married Ernest C. Kisow, who died November 20, 2002.

Surviving are a son, Ernest William Kisow (Dianne) of Blue Springs, Mo.; a daughter, Rosalind Kisow of Washington; two sisters, Nancy Pozonsky of Muse and Betty VanKirk of Houston; four grandchildren, Ernest G., Eric W. and twins Mathew L. and Meredith L. Kisow; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are four brothers, Harold, Frederick, William and Earl “Bud” Kersten, and five sisters, Anna Blumen, Eileen and Alice Kersten, Laura Morgan and Becky Zapotosky.

Marshall Little, a devoted husband and father who fought hard for his family, friends and community every day of his life, passed away Friday night, November 9, 2012.

He leaves behind his wife, Mindy; four children, Derek, Barrett, Caleb and Maggie; and a grandson, Jackson.

Also surviving are brothers Mark and Michael Little; and sister-in-law Cindy Long and her two sons, Grant and Ryan Dunham.

Dr. Little was a son of the late Robert “Jack” and Dorothy Little.

He was a dentist in Claysville. He cared for countless patients over the years with a level of kindness and devotion that many will never forget.

Always quick with a joke and a warm smile, he put his patients first on every trip they made to the dentist’s office. With him there, a visit to the dentist’s office was enjoyable.

Dr. Little raised four amazing children who have been profoundly successful. Derek is a graduate of Clemson University and works as an environmental engineer. He is married to Mary Catherine Little and lives in Athens, Ga.

Barrett is a graduate of the University of Richmond and Temple University School of Medicine and is training to be an orthopedic surgeon. He is married to Sarah Lingerfelt Little. They are the parents of Jackson Little and live in Richmond, Va.

Caleb is a graduate of the College of Charleston and works as an applications manager and lives in Bridgeville.

Maggie is a graduate of the University of Richmond and works as an assistant buyer in the fashion industry and lives in Claysville.

He and and his wife married June 21, 1980. They enjoyed 32 years of wonderful marriage. They traveled to Italy, England, Ireland and France. They camped and whitewater rafted the Grand Canyon. They walked the Golden Gate Bridge. They biked the Grand Teton Mountains. They made their life together a great adventure that knew few bounds.

Dr. Little was born July 6, 1954, in Fairmont, W.Va. He was a graduate of the West Virginia University School of Dentistry. He spent more than 30 years practicing dentistry in Claysville.

He loved history, cars and his dogs. He had a thirst for knowledge and teaching. He was charitable and kind. He was a friend. He was a rock to many. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Jennie Sarnicke, 82, of Washington, died Sunday, November 11, 2012, in Presbyterian SeniorCare, Washington.

She was born July 25, 1930, in Washington, a daughter of the late Joseph and Apolonia Valas Borowski.

Mrs. Sarnicke was a member of Holy Trinity National Catholic Church and its Adoration Society. She was active in church functions and enjoyed making pierogies for various fundraising events.

She was employed by Hazel Atlas 2 for 14 years and was a homemaker.

On September 28, 1953, she married Charles E. Sarnicke, who died January 22, 1989.

Surviving are a son, Samuel (Sandra) Sarnicke of McMurray; a daughter, Donna (Barry) Standiford of Washington; a sister, Stella Gibson of Washington; three grandchildren, Samantha, Melissa and Diana Sarnicke, all of McMurray; and a stepgranddaughter, Caroline Standiford of Tucson, Ariz.

Deceased are two brothers, Victor and Joseph Borowski.

She will be missed by her cats, Angel and Elvis.

Elmer Dean Schultz, 89, of Washington, died Saturday, November 10, 2012, in Presbyterian SeniorCare, Washington.

He was born August 5, 1923, in Claysville, a son of the late Peter and Violet Schultz.

Mr. Schultz was a 1942 graduate of Trinity High School and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

He worked at Hazel Atlas for 25 years and retired from Drakenfeld.

Mr. Schultz was a dedicated family man.

On June 30, 1946, he married Jean L. Schultz, who died April 23, 2004.

Surviving are a son, Kenneth (Claudia) Schultz of Venetia; a daughter, Gloria Martin of Amity; two grandchildren, David (Rita) Martin and Melissa McKenna; and two great-grandchildren, Alaina and Mason McKenna.

Deceased are three brothers, Kenny, Warren and Pete Schultz, and two sisters, Mildred Schultz and Violet Bissett.
