Samuel J. Amorose, 91, of Canonsburg, died Sunday, September 30, 2012, in McMurray Hills Manor, following a lengthy illness.

He was born August 19, 1921, in Salemville, son of Joseph and Cora Massimo Amorose.

Mr. Amorose was the last of his immediate family.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific for four years.

In later years, Mr. Amorose and Jim Liberatore headed a group that procured the money for a World War II monument listing all the local participants in World War II. They also were involved in finding a site for the monument, which is located at Canon-McMillan Middle School on Central Avenue.

Mr. Amorose was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.

He had been employed at Continental Can and later at McGraw Edison until his retirement in 1974. He was actively involved in the union at McGraw Edison and held several union offices while there.

Mr. Amorose, up until the time of passing, was involved in local politics and was a frequent contributor to the Observer-Reporter Letter to the Editor section.

He also was the president of The United Labor Committee of Washington County.

Mr. Amorose also was involved in getting a buyer for the former Cooper Power Systems after its closing, resulting in the plant being re-opened under new ownership. This effort and other local involvements resulted in Mr. Amorose being named 1996 Man of the Year in Canonsburg.

He was most proud of visiting President Clinton in the Oval Office on three occasions as a member of a special committee appointed by the president to advise on matters relating to Social Security and Medicare.

On may 17, 1947, he married Freda A. Bird, who passed away in December 2009.

Surviving are daughter Diane (Charles) Starinsky; granddaughter April Starinsky of Orlando, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his wife, are brothers Mike, Tony, John, Nick and Dan as well as sisters Stella, Lena, Dora and Mary.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Beinhauers. Friends are welcome from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Beinhauer-Bogan Funeral Home, 164 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, where a blessing service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 3.
