Robert J. Meneely
WWII vet, Farmers Home Administration retiree
Robert J. Meneely, 87, of Washington, died Friday, October 5, 2012, in Donnell House, Washington. He was born April 17, 1925, in Canonsburg, a son of the late Paul L. and Margaret Dixon Meneely. Mr. Meneely was a 1943 graduate of Chartiers High School and a 1950 graduate of Pennsylvania State University. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Mr. Meneely was first employed by Soil Conservation Service in Brookville and Clearfield. He then worked for Farmers Home Administration in Greensburg, Washington and Corry. For 28 years, he resided in Corry, where he was district director of Farmers Home Administration, for 13 years, serving the northwestern Pennsylvania region. He retired in December 1983. He had been a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in New Mexico and the National Park Service on Cumberland Island, Ga. Mr. Meneely was a member of Washington Presbyterian Church in America. He enjoyed gardening, traveling and genealogy. He was a former member of Sons of the American Revolution. On September 17, 1949, he married his wife of 63 years, Marjorie Paxton, who survives. Also surviving are three children, Scott Meneely and wife Kelly of Lebanon, Tenn., James Meneely and wife Shelly of Anaheim, Calif., and Gail Nelson and husband Garret of Apex, N.C.; and two granddaughters, Erin and Leah Nelson of Apex. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 10 to 11 a.m., the time of service, Monday, October 8, in McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, owner/supervisor, 27 Cherry Avenue, Houston, PA 15342, with the Rev. Donald F. Waltermyer officiating. Interment will be in Oak Spring Cemetery, Canonsburg.
