James Reed Chapman Jr., 90, of Washington, died Tuesday, October 23, 2012, in Humbert Lane Personal Care Home, Chartiers Township.He was born August 9, 1922, in Buffalo Village, son of J. Reed Chapman Sr. and Margaret Marquis Chapman, formerly of Prosperity.Mr. Chapman lived in Prosperity for many years and moved to Washington when he married. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, 644th Tank Destroyer Battalion. He was stationed in England, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, Ireland and Germany. Mr. Chapman’s military awards include the American Theater Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with five bronze service stars for participation in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe Campaigns. He was honorably discharged December 8, 1945, as a technical sergeant.Mr. Chapman was a member of American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 for 60 years and Loyal Order of the Moose.For 25 years, Mr. Chapman was employed by Reichart Furniture Co. and for 20 years was employed by C.J. Langenfelder Construction Co., Baltimore, Md., retiring as a foreman in 1984.Surviving are three stepdaughters, Nancy L. (Thomas J.) Grant of Key Largo, Fla., Carol S. Enoch of Miami, Fla., and Beverly J. Vankirk of Washington; two stepgrandsons, a stepgreat-grandson; a brother, Robert Chapman of Reno, Nev.; four nieces, including Jean Schultz of Prosperity; and two nephews.Deceased are his wife of 47 years, Alice M. Chapman; a brother, Wayne Chapman; and a sister, Elisabeth Chapman Longdon.Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 27. Burial will follow in Prosperity Cemetery.
