Madge South Milliken Day, 96, died peacefully at 8:45 a.m. Friday, September 28, 2012, in Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim, after being of declining health the past six months.
She was born March 25, 1916, in Waynesburg, daughter of the late Stephan Dawson South and Ellen Marie Norberg South of Waynesburg.
Mrs. Day was a graduate of Waynesburg High School in 1935 and Penn Commercial College in Washington in 1937.
She was a member of Washington Street United Methodist Church.
She married John M. (Jack) Milliken of Waynesburg October 18, 1942, and they moved to Beaver Falls and later to New Kensington. They returned to Waynesburg in 1957, where Mr. Milliken was killed in an automobile accident November 9, 1958. She worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare for eight years after that.
On November 23, 1967, she married H. Vance Day of Washington, where they lived for seven years. They then retired and moved to Clearwater, Fla., where Mr. Day died May 26, 1994.
Mrs. Day returned to Pennsylvania to live at Pleasant View in March 2006 at the age of 90, to be close to her son, Frank Douglas (Dorothy Cary) Milliken, who lives in Lancaster. Her older son, John D. (Arlene Lofgren) Milliken, lives in Wooster, Ohio.
She leaves five grandchildren, Susan (Alvin) Raber and Deborah (David) Ryan of Pickerington, Ohio, Mike Milliken of Makawao, Hawaii, Tim Milliken of Lancaster and Dan Milliken of Astoria, N.Y.; two great-grandsons, A.J. and Max Raber of Pickerington; numerous nieces and nephews including James H. (Aurelia) Strosnider of Waynesburg, Pam Milliken of Fogelsville, J.K. (Kris) Milliken of Medina, Ohio, and Becky (Steven) Raber of Waynesburg.
Deceased are three sisters, Ruth S. Dille, Jean Strosnider and Eliza Jane South.
She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. Her spirit and faith were an inspiration to all who knew her.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Home Inc., Daryl L. Throckmorton, owner/director, 197 North Maiden Street, Waynesburg, where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, October 1, with the Rev. William Parker officiating. Burial will be at Greene County Memorial Park, Morgan Township. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a memorial fund in her honor at Washington Street United Methodist Church, 152 South Washington Street, Waynesburg, PA 15370.
