Canonsburg resident loved her faith and family

Anita V. Alterio, 76, of Canonsburg, died Saturday, August 3, 2013, in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born November 1, 1936, in Hendersonville, a daughter of the late Vincenzo and Anna Marie Refosco Teatino.

Mrs. Alterio was a lifelong member of St. Patrick Parish in Canonsburg.

During her youth, she attended Cecil High School.

Baking and traveling with family brought her great joy, and she loved spending time around the holidays with her family and friends.

She was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates baseball fan.

Viewing Mass and praying the rosary daily in her home brought her great peace.

She always loved people and enjoyed her many friendships throughout her life.

Sarris Candies in Canonsburg employed her as a candy maker for nine years until her retirement.

On September 1, 1958, in St. Patrick Church, she married her loving husband of 54 years, Ralph A. Alterio, who survives.

Surviving are two daughters, Marianne (Darryl) Wargo of Canonsburg and Monica (Robert) Durbin of Canonsburg.

Also surviving are two brothers, Vincent (Joanne) Teatino of Imperial and Steve (Judy) Tetino of Canonsburg, and two sisters-in-law, Stephanie Teatino of Hendersonville and Mary Ann Barbosky of Canonsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Two sisters, Connie Teatino and Theresa Porter, and two brothers, Christopher in infancy and Jack Teatino; and a brother-in-law, Roy Porter, are deceased.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Mario L. DeAngelo Funeral Home, 194 East College Street, Canonsburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 7, in St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Canonsburg. Formerly owned Barkley Excavating

Grant Warren Barkley, 57, of Harmony, passed away July 23, 2013, while under the care of UPMC-Passavant hospital, Cranberry Township.

Born June 24, 1956, in Ellwood City, he was a son of the late Pierce Edward and Helen Lutz Barkley.

He previously owned Barkley Excavating. He was a loving father, brother, fiance and grandfather who will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.

Surviving are his fiancee, Angela “Angie” Dent; his son, Travis Barkley and wife Brianna of Greensboro; his daughter, Tara Bruno and husband Carmen; his seven grandchildren, Gianni, Ava and Isabella Bruno and Pierce, Donna Jean, Gunner and Bruce Barkley; and his brothers, Kenneth and Dale Barkley.

In addition to his parents, deceased is his brother, Raymond Barkley, who passed away in 1965.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 11, in First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro, Clear and Second streets, Greensboro, with the Rev. Bob Randolph officiating. Friends are invited to a meal and refreshments following the service at Greensboro Log Cabin.

Pleiger Plastics employee served in Vietnam

Robert Lloyd Cox, 61, of Washington, died unexpectedly Friday, August 2, 2013, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh.

He was born November 3, 1951, in Washington, a son of Charles E. Cox of Washington and Fonnie Poland of Washington.

Mr. Cox graduated from Trinity High School and served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam.

He was employed as a purchasing agent for Pleiger Plastics for 25 years. He enjoyed painting, fishing, watching television and using computers.

On May 27, 1977, he married Debra Louise Peel, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Christopher Martin Cox of Washington; two brothers, Charles E. Cox of Prosperity and Donald Cox of Ohio; a sister, Donna Callahan of Little Rock, Ark.; and stepmother Rita Cox.

Accomplished artist

Marilyn J. Daugherty, 87, of Claysville, died at 9 a.m. Friday, August 2, 2013, in Washington County Health Center, Chartiers Township, after suffering a stroke July 14, 2013.

She was born January 31, 1926, in Columbus, Ohio, a daughter of the late Arthur Earl and Nellie A. Murray Robinson.

Mrs. Daugherty resided in Fullerton, Calif., prior to moving to Donegal Township in 1965.

She was a 1944 graduate of the old Hickory High School.

Mrs. Daugherty was an accomplished artist, doing pencil sketchings and painting her sketchings. She crocheted and rode her horse, Ginger, as long as health permitted.

On September 5, 1964, she married Joseph Eben Daugherty Sr., who survives.

Also surviving are four stepchildren, Linda, wife of Milton Rice of Hickory, Diane Scott of Washington, Roy, husband of Debbie Daugherty of Morgan, and Ronald, husband of Sandy Daugherty of Meadow Lands; several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Norma Labock of Greensburg; a brother, Alan, husband of Dorothy Robinson of Latrobe; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to her parents, are a stepson, Joseph E. Daugherty Jr.; her twin sister, Evelyn Darner; and a brother, Earl Robinson.

Retired mould maker served in Korea

Paul William Gehrke, 78, of Meadow Lands, died Friday, August 2, 2013, in Donnell House, Washington.

He was born May 18, 1935, in Coshocton, Ohio, a son of the late William and Edna Wilson Gehrke.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, working on helicopters in Korea.

Mr. Gehrke was a retired mould maker, having worked for Metro Glass and Ball Glass and retiring from Penn Mould. He was a very active Boy Scout leader (Order of the Arrow). He was a member of Houston American Legion and enjoyed fishing.

On October 27, 1956, he married Mildred Brant, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, William Paul (Sharon) Gehrke of Canonsburg; a daughter, Patricia Gehrke of Meadow Lands; two sisters, Oneita Baker of Avonmore and Carol Kessinger of Arcadia, Fla.; and a grandchild, Timothy (fiancee Aleea Yevins) Gehrke.

Deceased are a sister, Alma Meyer, and an infant brother.

Best known for her afghans

Dorothy Marie Hentosz passed away peacefully in her home Friday morning, August 2, 2013, surrounded by family. She was 90.

Known as “Dot” and “Angel,” Mrs. Hentosz was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Her heart knew no boundaries, and, through her skilled hands, she worked to serve and bring joy to countess others. It was only fitting that this earthly angel called each of us “Angel,” a term of endearment that many cherished.

She was perhaps best known for her afghans. She spent a million hours stringing together thousands of miles of yarn and, in many ways, worked to bind us all together in love. Her afghans covered countless individuals from those in need at St. Thomas More and Center Presbyterian churches, to her family, her friends and people that simply offered her a kind word or deed. These afghans even earned a few blue ribbons at the Washington County Fair over the years.

She spent more than 15 years volunteering for the Peters Township Meals on Wheels program as a cook after she retired from DePaul Institute for Hearing and Speech as well as Oliver Tyrone Corp. and IBM Co. in Pittsburgh.

Every Christmas, all DePaul students took home one of her handmade crafts to their families.

She was born in Pittsburgh’s North Side, October 10, 1922, to the late Lawrence Simon and Alma Strauser. She was married for 26 years to Anthony Hentosz, who is deceased. She moved to Peters Township with her daughter Michele’s family in 1987 from Beechview.

Surviving are her three daughters, Carol (E. James) Horney of Bethel Park, Michele (William) Blosel of Venetia and Denise (Rodney) Shipe of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; her sister, Loretta Coronado, and her brother, Lawrence “Bud” Simon, both of Pittsburgh; nine grandchildren, James Horney, Daniel Horney, Jeannette (Bradly) Boner, Christopher (Kristin) Blosel, Thomas Blosel, Danielle (Jonathan) Sheffler, Melissa (Chris) Owens, Michael Shipe and Kevin Shipe; and eight great-grandchildren, including one expected in December. She will also be remembered by nieces, nephews, countless friends and family members.

Arizona engineer was born in Washington

Daniel R. Katreeb, 60, passed away Friday, July 19, 2013, in his home in Tucson, Ariz.

He was born February 20, 1953, in Washington.

He attended Log Pile School before his family moved to Downey, Calif., in 1964, graduating from Downey High in 1971.

Mr. Katreeb graduated from California State University, Long Beach, in June 1977 with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering.

He worked as a research engineer for Lockheed Martin and a senior tech specialist for Northrop Grumman. At the time of his death, he was employed at Raytheon in Tucson.

His interests include museums, outdoor activities and aviation.

Surviving are his father, Robert J. Katreeb of Tucson; mother Dolores Gesualdi-Loest of Florissant, Colo.; sister Susan A. Katreeb of Florissant; and many relatives throughout the United States.

Katherine E. “Katie” O’Bryan Plants, 81, of Washington, died Friday, August 2, 2013, in Southmont of Presbyterian SeniorCare, Washington.

She was born October 7, 1931, in Washington, a daughter of Randle and Ethel Mae Iams Glendenning.

She worked for the former Gaylord’s store and was a secretary for Lightning Express Co.

Mrs. Plants was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 175 of Washington for more than 20 years and the Independent Club.

Surviving are two daughters, Kathleen R. (Fred) Woods and Karen F. O’Bryan, both of Washington; three brothers, John N., James A. and Harry (Bonnie) Glendenning, all of Washington; three sisters, Geraldine Pryor, Ethel (John) Molinaro and Leona L. Zitkovich, all of Washington; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are her husbands, Franklin O’Bryan and Harold W. Plants; two sons, Frank D. “Bitter” and James A. “Stubby” O’Bryan; a granddaughter, Kaitlin O’Bryan; two brothers, Randy and David Glendenning; and two sisters, Anna Marie Fulton and Martha Jean Provance.

WWII veteran, carpenter, machinist, soccer player

Robert A. Plute, 89, of Houston, died Friday, August 2, 2013, in his home.

He was born September 12, 1923, in Castle Shannon, a son of Anthony and Katherine Maciejewski Plute.

Mr. Plute attended Cecil Township schools and obtained his GED when he returned from the service.

During World War II, he served in the Army in the South Pacific Theater. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 553 in Strabane.

Mr. Plute worked as a carpenter and machinist at the former Canonsburg Transformer, where he was active in the steelworkers union as an officer and grievanceman, retiring in 1968. He was an officer in the Active Retirees of Canonsburg, SOAR Chapter 15-8.

He was an avid soccer player and fan, having played for several local teams. He was a member of the Heidelberg team that won the National Amateur Cup and the West Penn Cup in the 1954-55 season.

On November 9, 1957, he married Marjorie Adams Pfender, who died March 19, 2004.

Surviving are three children, Jamie McNurlen (Ray) of Muse, Sherry Gross of Bridgeville and Lee Pfender (Alison) of Washington; six grandchildren, Scott Domske, Jessica Gross, Jesse McNurlen, Sgt. Justin McNurlen, Ed Pfender and Emmylou Ray (BJ); three great grandchildren, Jayla Domske and Blake and Marcus Ray; a sister, Alice Plute of Canonsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

A brother, Edwin Plute, and a sister, Gertrude Hatalsky, are deceased.

Mary B. Pomykala, 90, of Washington, died Thursday, August 1, 2013, in Evergreen Personal Care Home, Washington.

She was born August 8, 1922, in Washington, a daughter of the late George and Anna Repka Antol.

Mrs. Pomykala attended Trinity schools.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Pomykala loved her grandson, enjoyed flowers, gardening and loved her pets.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Roman Catholic Church, Meadow Lands, as well as the First Catholic Slovak Ladies’ Association.

On November 21, 1953, in Washington, she married Henry “Herky” Pomykala, who died August 2, 2000.

Surviving are a daughter, Amy Kovats and husband Michael, and a grandson, Michael H. Kovats.

Deceased are a son, Henry “Bud” Pomykala; a daughter, Linda Pomykala; four brothers, John, Steve, Pete and Joe Antol; and four sisters, Anna Mazzi, Margaret Antol, Katherine Mersky and Helen Orlosky.

David P. Rosborough, 60, of Robinson Township, formerly of Eighty Four, passed away peacefully July 27, 2013, surrounded by family.

He was the beloved husband of Gay Rosborough; loving father of Heather (Dustin) Barlow and Jennifer (William) Piktel; and devoted grandfather of Austin, Avril and Aubrie Barlow.

He was born January 30, 1953, a son of the late Paul L. and Marjorie A. Rosborough.

Mr. Rosborough was an avid car enthusiast and loved taking his cars to car shows. He loved nature, bird-watching and spending time with his German shepherds.

He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.
