Edwin Maltony
Coach, humble servant gave his time and talent
Edwin Maltony, 80, of Cuero, Texas, passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2013.
He was born October 28, 1932, in Joffe, a son of the late Louis and Erma Maltony.
Mr. Maltony graduated from Union High School, Burgettstown, in 1950 and went to college at Waynesburg on a wrestling scholarship where he was selected NCAA All-American heavyweight wrestler. His college career was cut short when he joined the U.S. Army during the Korean War and served as a military policeman at Fort Knox, Ky., from 1953 to 1955.
After the military, he returned to college and received his bachelor of science degree in education from North Texas State. He then met and married his wife, Diana Meadows.
Mr. Maltony was a coach of all sports at Cuero High School from 1958 to 1960. He stayed in Cuero School District by substitute teaching for 44 years, teaching drivers education for 35 years and only missed one football game in the last 44 years – that was because his daughter, Vickie, was getting married.
He jumped on the bandwagon with Rudy Evers, who organized the first Booster Club at the Doll House to watch film and get scout reports. He was instrumental in helping build the practice field, assemble the new stadium, construct a new track and help with the new gymnasium. He was the first person to receive CISD Continuing Service Award.
Mr. Maltony was a humble servant who gave his time, talent and money to the kids of Cuero ISD, from money for lunches, rides to practice, counseling to keep them in college or just that plain old caring attitude that said, “I care.”
Surviving are his wife, Diana Maltony; children Vickie Arrell (Rocky) and David Maltony (Lisa); grandchildren Eric Arrell, Lisa Budarf, Marlayna McKinley, Ryan McKinley, Tyler McKinley, Marlin Maltony (fiancé Leah Soefje) and Reed Maltony; great-grandchildren Eli, Ean and Eliza Arrell and Trey and Jackson Budarf; brothers Bob (Carol) Maltony, Ron Maltony, Rich (Lois) Maltony and Tom Maltony; and a sister, Carol (Larry) Keating.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, JoAnn Spiotta.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, August 9, in First Presbyterian Church, Cuero, with Pastor Bill Cotman officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Cuero Education Foundation.
