Retired farmer served in WWII

Oliver Earl “Chris” Christensen, 94, of Washington, died unexpectedly Thursday, August 22, 2013.

He was born June 26, 1919, in Washington, Neb., a son of George Martin and Annie Mary Pate Christensen.

Mr. Christensen served in the Coast Guard in World War II, as a chief gunner’s mate.

He was a farmer, retiring in 1989, and an over-the-road trucker for Owen-Illinois.

Mr. Christensen was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church. He also was a member of American Legion Post 175, Elks, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Arms Club and Independent Political Club.

On December 10, 1942, in St. Augustine, Fla., he married Mary Eleanore Hazlett, who died November 9, 1995.

Surviving are a son, James (Mary) Martin Christensen of Spring Lake Park, Minn.; a daughter, Renee (Lawrence) Mezza of Jamesville, N.Y.; a sister, Ruby Chapman of Blair, Neb.; three grandchildren, Jill (Bryan) Christensen Downey of Denver, Colo., Michelle (Jesse) Blackhurst Leichty of Eighty Four and Kelly (Jeff) LaFrance; and four great-grandchildren, Emma, Blake, Chase and Drew Leichty.

Deceased are three brothers, Hank, William and Howard Christensen; and two sisters, Mabel Nelson and Hazel Gregerson.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 28. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery.

Enjoyed riding his motorcycle, fishing

Fred Clore, 58, of Washington, died Friday, August 23, 2013, in Center for Compassionate Care, Mt. Lebanon, following a brief battle with cancer.

He was born March 14, 1955, in Bristol, Tenn., a son of the late Glenn H. and Helen Moore Clore.

Mr. Clore was a 1973 graduate of Trinity High School.

He worked 32 years as a shift supervisor for Bucyrus, formerly known as Milcraft Mining, MTA and DBT.

Mr. Clore enjoyed riding his motorcycle, hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was a member of Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen’s Club, Washington Chapter of Wounded Warriors and National Rifle Assosiation.

On July 2, 1976, he married Lisa Pattison, who survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Korene (Bryon) Sibert of Houston; a son, Jarred Clore of Phoenix, Ariz.; two grandsons, Reilly and Reagan Sibert; a brother, Ray (Gretchen) Clore of Eighty Four; two sisters, Coleen (Hayes) Harvey of Washington and Glenna (Earl) McDougal of Marianna; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday in Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 27, with Pastor Fran Skariot officiating. Interment will follow in Washington Cemetery.

1939 – 2013

Kathleen E. Czulewicz, 73, of Claysville, formerly of Erie, passed away Friday, August 23, 2013, in Millcreek Community Hospital, Erie.

She was born November 29, 1939, in Erie, a daughter of the late Vern and Eleanor Reinwald.

Mrs. Czulewicz lived in many areas of the United States because of her husband’s work, but, for the last 37 years, they always summered at Sara Coyne Campground. She was considered the “Mayor of the Beach.” She received the Kindest Camper Award and cherished all her friendships with her beach buddies. She was well-known for the cookies she baked, and in Claysville, she was known as the Cookie Lady.

Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Frank Czulewicz; three children, Michael Czulewicz (Debra), Debi Lipnicky (Rick) and Brian Czulewicz (Carmela); a sister, Donna Wright; two brothers, John Reinwald (Dorothy) and Richard Reinwald (Irena); eight grandchildren whom she lovingly adored, Kylie, Matthew, Rachel, Marcus, Michael (Heather), Anthony (Kelly), Nicole and Cassie; three great-grandchildren whom she loved to spoil, Gage, Alexis and Presley; and nieces and nephews.

Deceased are an infant daughter; two brothers, Robert and James Reinwald; and a brother-in-law, Richard Wright.

Proud “Nana” was homemaker

Caryl E. Duvuvei, 72, of Rostraver Township, passed away Friday, August 23, 2013, in Manor Care, Green Tree.

She was born September 2, 1940, a daughter of the late Charles and Grace Timblin.

Mrs. Duvuvei was a graduate of Avalon High School.

She worked as a secretary for the state of Pennsylvania before becoming a homemaker.

Surviving are her husband, Robert Duvuvei Sr. of Weedville; a daughter, Tammy (Jook) George of Midway; a brother, Charles (Elizabeth) Timblin of Ross Township; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

Mrs. Duvuvei was a proud “Nana” to grandchildren William and Kayla George, with whom she loved spending time. She always attended her grandson’s football games and enjoyed playing games with her granddaughter.

She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her and whose lives she touched over the years.

Member of Immaculate Conception Church

Betty Gualteri, 86, of Washington, died Saturday, August 24, 2013, in Evergreen Personal Care Home, Washington.

She was born August 19, 1927, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Charles Edward Korte and Lillian Patterson Korte.

Mrs. Gualteri was employed by Hazel Atlas and Washington School District as head cook.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church and enjoyed cooking, gardening, crocheting and spending time with her family.

On September 20, 1947, she married Dominick Gualteri, who died February 27, 2011.

Surviving are a daughter, Rebecca (Robert) Winters of Washington; two sisters, Mary Ruth Rhoades of Banetown and Lillian Dentel of Washington; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Tony) Mounts of Houston, Dominick (Kari) Winters of Ohio, Jessica Selai and Lindsay Kusturas; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are two sons, Charles Edward and Frank Gualteri; and two brothers, Charles “Buck” Korte and William Korte, who died at birth.

April 29, 1932 – August 23, 2013

The Rev. Paul Franklin Knight, 81, of Ligonier, died Friday, August 23, 2013, in UPMC-Shadyside hospital, Pittsburgh.

He was born April 29, 1932, in Minerva, Ohio, a son of Aryl Knight and Amanda Riebe Knight.

The Rev. Knight preached for 40 years and also taught school for 10 years while preaching. For 14 years, he was the minister of First Church of the Nazarene in Washington, retiring in 1997, and preached another 15 or more years after retiring.

He played the saxophone and was an artist.

On August 7, 1954, he married Audrey Rigby, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Paula (John) Hyland of Yardley and Shila (Mark) Matson of New Florence; two brothers, Ronald Gilbert and Raymond Lindeman of Louisville, Ohio; three sisters, Donna Willet of Williamsport, Md., Rita Klingaman of Ohio and Carol Lindeman of Louisville; grandchildren Angela (Chris) Neumaier, the Rev. Jonathan (Sharla) Rider, David, Jenae, Mary, Katelyn, Kassandra, Matthew, Sarah and Andrew (fiancee Casey) Matson and Emily and Katelyn Hyland; and great-grandchildren Joshua, Anna, Ethan, Grace, and Eva Rose Neumaier and Bethany, Brianna and Emily Rider.

Deceased are a son, Wesley David Knight, and a sister, Marilyn Schwitzbel.

Beloved McCracken Pharmacy deliveryman

John Paul McCracken, 56, of Waynesburg, died Friday, August 23, 2013, in his home.

He was born April 14, 1957, in Columbus, Ohio, a son of the late Jack and Delores McCracken.

Mr. McCracken and his parents moved to Waynesburg, where he spent the rest of his life.

He graduated from Waynesburg Central High School in 1976 and thereafter attended Salem University in West Virginia, where he studied education.

Upon his return from Salem, he began his career at McCracken Pharmacy, where the community came to know him in his steadfast role of deliveryman. He worked at McCracken Pharmacy for more than 30 years, until his unexpected death.

Mr. McCracken was a member of Whiteley Creek Community Church and a member of Waynesburg Lodge 153 F&AM and Scottish Rite Valley of Uniontown. He was also a member of Izaak Walton League of America and Independent Order of Odd Fellows, where he served a full term as noble grand.

He was an avid fan of the Three Stooges, Penn State and Pittsburgh Pirates. He enjoyed bowling and driving his Mustang convertible.

Surviving are two brothers, Jeff (Helen) McCracken of Waynesburg and Jay (Anne) McCracken of Bluffton, Ohio, and four nieces, Elissa, Lindsey, Katie and Molly.

Ronald Allen Stivason, 77, of Dunnellon, Fla., died Wednesday, August 14, 2013.

He was longtime owner of Beltone Hearing Aid Service, Washington.

Mapletown resident

Arthur O. Wilson, 89, of Mapletown, Greene County, died Friday, August 23, 2013, and went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ.

He was born April 11, 1924, in Lake Lynn, a son of the late Herbert Wilson and Cora Graham Wilson.

Also deceased are his loving wife of 65 years, Rhea Wilson; infant son Arthur Edmund Wilson; stepmother Opel Wilson; brothers Howard, Frank and Thomas Wilson; and sisters Virginia Presock, Dorothy Halpka, Ilene Halbert, Glenna Kramer and Margaret Lemke.

Mr. Wilson was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II.

He was retired from Shannopin Mining Co. and was a longtime member of United Mine Workers of America Local 6159, Bobtown Volunteer Fire Department, Bobtown United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6303 of Greensboro, American Legion Post 499 of Point Marion, Valley Lodge 459 F&AM, Uniontown Lodge of Perfection and Pittsburgh Consistry.

Surviving are his loving family, including four children, David Wilson and wife Debbie of Greensboro, Terry Wilson and wife Terry of Beaver Falls, Susan Drew and husband Keith of Greensboro and Artie Wilson and wife Bobbi Jo; 12 grandchildren, Kathy, Bryan, Karen, Sharon, Krissy, Jason, Jennifer, Beth, Ryan, Brittany, Jackie and Nikki; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Billie Joe Wilson; a sister, Mildred Vazquez and husband Tito; and a half sister, Novella Shaffer.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday and until 11 a.m., the time of service, Monday, August 26, in Richard R. Herod Funeral Home, 501 Morgantown Street, Point Marion, with the Rev. Barbara G. Yeager, 66, of Waynesburg, died Thursday, August 22, 2013, in Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg.

She was born July 8, 1947, in Jersey City, N.J., a daughter of the late Franklyn and Theresa Baron Guidas.

Mrs. Yeager was a homemaker and had worked part-time at Imperial Cleaners in Waynesburg.

She was a member of St. Marcellus Roman Catholic Church and its Ladies Guild and Patron Mary Knoll Society and National Rifle Association.

On September 19, 1981, she married Richard A. Yeager, who survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Tricia Hatton and husband Gerald of Atlasburg, and two grandsons, Richard Hatton and Franklyn Hatton.
