Former manager of Washington paint store

Donald E. Anderson, 79, of Everett, formerly of Canonsburg and Washington, was called home to be with his Lord Saturday, August 24, 2013, with family by his side.

He was born Sunday, September 17, 1933, in Huston, a son of the late Kenneth B. Anderson and Dorothy Fleck Anderson.

On November 4, 1967, in Washington, he married Sophia Martha “Dolly” Peters, who survives along with their two daughters, Michele Briggs and husband Joe Briggs and Marcia Honsburger and husband Brent Honsburger, and six grandchildren, Evan, Eric, Jesse, Shaun, Valen and Sarah.

Mr. Anderson was a member of Manns Choice Church of God, where he served as an elder and as a member of the church council.

After serving in the U.S. Army, where he was in charge of weapons, he managed the Pittsburgh Paints store in Washington for many years.

For the past 35 years, he and his wife Sophia have owned and operated their Sheepskin Country Store at three locations, one shop in Everett for the past 25 years, as well as a shop at Savage Mill in Savage, Md., and another in Hagerstown, Md.

At home, he enjoyed reading, hunting, fishing and taking his family for long Sunday rides. He was an instructor and lifelong member of the National Rifle Association and will be greatly missed for his welcoming smile, sense of humor and kind and caring ways.

Family and friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m., the time of service, Sunday, September 1, in Manns Choice Church of God, 6150 Allegheny Road, Manns Choice, PA 15550, with Pastor Richard Whetstone officiating.

June 16, 1924 – August 26, 2013

Betty Lou Clark, 89, died Monday, August 26, 2013.

She was born June 16, 1924, in Burgettstown, along with her late sister Gertrude Roberts, was raised by parents the late Edward and Elsie Linn Hamilton.

In 1944, she married the late Joseph Edward Clark of Bulger. Together, they had four daughters, Betty Jo (Dale) Ziegler of San Diego, Calif., Saundra (David) Kosar of Mars, Patricia “Patty” Clark and the late Deborah Linn (Don) Perry.

Also surviving are five grandchildren, Kerri, Corey, Brooke, Meghan and Samantha, and two great-grandchildren, Braydon and Emma.

Mrs. Clark loved being a homemaker, a Mom and a “Grammy.”

She filled her home with love, values, care, beauty and good food. All those memories of dancing, singing, reading, drawing, making things “pretty” and caring for others became her legacy. Her great inner strength carried her with dignity through her difficult path of growing old with severe back pain.

Mrs. Clark is missed and loved and will be in her family’s hearts forever.

Friends are welcome from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Lee and Martin Funeral Home, 73 Highland Avenue, Burgettstown, PA 15021, where a blessing service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 30. Burial will be in Chestnut Ridge Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Avid golfer served in Army

John A. “Jake” Kestner, 66, of North Franklin Township, died Monday, August 26, 2013, in his home, after a lengthy illness.

He was born December 23, 1946, in Washington, a son of the late Charles and Irene Phillips Kestner.

Mr. Kestner was a 1965 graduate of Washington High School, where he was an avid football player and played semi-professional football for the Washington Generals. He attended Iowa State University.

He was employed as a melt shop foreman for Washington Steel and was vice president of the union at Washington Steel, until his retirement.

Mr. Kestner was an avid golfer and was very active and athletic, attending the Wellness Center faithfully. He was called “The Gardener” at Greenhill Drive, by his neighbors and friends. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and nature and was an avid outdoorsman.

He was a member of Greene County Country Club and was also on its board. He was also a member of BPOE Elks Lodge 776 and American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.

He served in the U.S. Army, doing two tours in Vietnam with the Special Forces and Army Rangers. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal.

On August 28, 1971, he married Toni K. Cecil in St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church, Washington, and enjoyed 42 years of marriage.

Also surviving are two daughters, Chalise Kestner (Andrew Kirby) and Ashley Kestner of Washington; a sister, Judy (Joe) Sopcak of Washington; two grandchildren, Ashlyn and Alivia Kirby; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a brother, Robert Kestner, and two sisters, Lois Kestner (died at age three) and Anita Reihner.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m Friday in Warco-Falvo Funeral Home Inc., Wilson at East Katherine avenues, Washington, S. Timothy Warco, supervisor/director, Susan Falvo Warco, director, S. Timothy Warco II, director, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 31, with the Rev. Susan Petritis officiating. Interment will be private.
