WWII Navy veteran
Charles R. Gerwell, 97, of Fallowfield Township, died Monday, December 2, 2013, in his home.
He was born June 2, 1916, in Cokeburg, a son of Charles and Josephine Miskiel Gerwell.
Mr. Gerwell retired from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Allenport plant.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Gerwell was a member of Holy Ghost Byzantine Church in Charleroi.
He was an avid gardener and enjoyed taking care of his fruit trees and vegetable garden.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, John and Diane Gerwell of Fallowfield Township; a daughter and son-in-law, Monica Gerwell and Timothy Tomasko of Pittsburgh; and two grandchildren, Hilary and husband Jimmy Johnson and Derek Gibino.
Deceased are his wife, Elizabeth Chelena Gerwell, who died in 2002; two brothers, Stanley and Wallace Gerwell; and a sister, Josephine McMahan.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Melenyzer-DuBarr Funeral Homes and Cremation Services Inc., 825 Fallowfield Avenue, Charleroi. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, December 5, in Holy Ghost Byzantine Church, Charleroi, with the Rev. James Ragan, as celebrant. Interment will follow in Mt. Macrina Cemetery, Uniontown.
