Benjamin W. Jacobs Jr., 79, of Waynesburg, died Tuesday, December 3, 2013, in his home.
He was born May 8, 1934, in Morgan Township, a son of the late Benjamin W. Jacobs Sr. and Margaret Hoge Jacobs.
Mr. Jacobs was a 1952 graduate of Waynesburg High School.
He was a dairy farmer with his father until the age of 34, when he began working in the coal mines. He worked as a coal miner at several mines, with the last being Gateway Coal Company. After working in coal mines, he owned and operated Ben’s Courier Service for 20 years. He sold the courier service but continued to work as a dispatcher for four more years, until his declining health prevented him from continuing.
Mr. Jacobs was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Lippencott, where he was a former deacon and choir member. He was also a member of United Mine Workers of America.
On July 1, 1955, he married Audrey Bise, who survives.
Also surviving are four daughters, Wendy S. Jacobs of Waynesburg, Judy L. Carrico of New Freeport, Malvine A. Litten of Stow, Ohio, and Jennifer J. Casale and husband Thomas of Stow; three grandchildren, Brandon J. Kotarsky, Jack H. Litten III and Audrey M. Litten; and a sister, Emily J. Montgomery of Jeanette.
Deceased are a son, Benjamin W. Jacobs III, and two sisters, Martha J. Pollock and Mary Ellen Morris.
Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, December 6, in Behm Funeral Homes Inc., 1477 Jefferson Road, Jefferson, Gregory P. Rohanna, supervisor, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 7, with the Rev. Nick Bardo officiating. Interment will follow in Greene County Memorial Park, Morgan Township.
