Lawrence M. Adams, 84, of Cedar Grove, died at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 4, 2013, in Washington County Health Center, Chartiers Township.

He was born July 23, 1929, in Wellsburg, W.Va., a son of the late John and Anna Katherine Bakan Adams.

Mr. Adams was employed as a coal miner for Valley Camp Coal Co. for 15 years. He was also the owner and operator of Larry’s Paint and Body Shop from 1960 to 2009 and Adams Tavern from 1962 to 1985, both of Cedar Grove.

He was a member of Avella Volunteer Fire Department, Brooke County Sportsmen Club and United Mine Workers of America. He sang in the Presidents of Harmony Barbershop Group and was an honorary member of the Red Hat Society. He also drove the bus for the Cross Creek Valley Senior Citizen Center and sang in their choir.

Mr. Adams was an avid golfer and loved to dance, play bingo, travel and trap shoot. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He had lived in Avella since 1936.

On July 8, 1950, he married his former wife, Dorothy R. Courtwright Adams of Cedar Grove, who survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Laurie (Keith) Leeper of Avella, Jackie (Jerald) Strope of Eldersville and Jerrie (Arthur) Foltz of Avella; a son, John D. Adams of Washington; seven grandchildren, Stephanie (Don) Bell, Peter (Jennifer) Strope, J. Keith Leeper II, Matthew (Katie) Leeper, Casey (Jason) Kettler, Arthur (Ashley) Foltz and Andrew Adams; five great-grandchildren, Tyler, Joshua, Joseph, Ryan and Lindsey; a brother, John N. (Alna) Adams of Midland; a half-sister, Katherine Sprute of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are a sister, Della Walker, and stepmother Matilda Charlier Adams.

Friends and family will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday in Jerome A. Stefkovich Funeral Home Inc., 18 Campbell Street, Avella, PA 15312, where services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, December 7. Burial will be in West Point Cemetery, Avella.
