Langeloth Presbyterian Church member

Alice Alvarez, 78, of Langeloth, was welcomed home by her Lord and Savior Monday, December 9, 2013.

She was a member of Langeloth Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder for many years.

Deceased are her father, Manuel Alvarez Sr.; her mother, Maria Busto Alvarez; and a brother, Manuel Alvarez.

Surviving are a sister, Mary Reszke and husband Fred of Weirton, W.Va.; a sister-in-law, Sandy Alvarez of Economy; a niece, Lisa Trimble and husband Matthew of Erie; a nephew, David Alvarez and wife Amanda of Center Township; two great-nephews, Colton and Brayden Trimble; and a great-niece, Makayla Lowe.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Taucher Funeral Home, 23 Erie Mine Road, Burgettstown, where a funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, December 12, by her pastor, the Rev. William Romer. Interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Burgettstown.

Arrangements have been entrusted to David M. Alvarez, F.D., Poland Funeral Home Inc., Conway.

Rae Ann Belcastro, 59, of Washington, died unexpectedly Monday, December 9, 2013, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh.

Arrangements are incomplete and have been entrusted to Warco-Falvo Funeral Home Inc., Washington. A complete obituary will be published in a later edition.

Alice Jane “AJ” Burgan, 65, of New Eagle, died unexpectedly Sunday, December 8, 2013, in her home.

She was born April 3, 1948, in New Eagle, a daughter of the late Charles Francis and Mildred Elizabeth Smail Rice.

At the time of her death, Mrs. Burgan was employed at SKC Inc. in Eighty Four.

She enjoyed going on trips to The Meadows Racetrack & Casino and watching tennis and bowling on television.

Surviving are her daughter, Carey Lewis and husband Dave of Fredericktown; grandsons Jeremiah and Alexander Lewis; two brothers, James Rice and wife Helen and Samuel Rice and wife Belinda; and two sisters, Arbutus “Sis” Himich and Ruth Ann Gregg and husband William, both of New Eagle.

In addition to her parents, deceased are a brother, Charles F. Rice Jr. and a sister, Juanita Subasick.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, December 11, in Frye Funeral Home Inc., 427 West Main Street, Monongahela. Inurnment will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Monongahela, at the convenience of the family.

Brownsville Hospital nursing assistant

Mildred Bennett Franks, 83, of Uniontown, formerly of Coal Center, died Monday, December 9, 2013.

She was born January 31, 1930, a daughter of the late Oliver Jennings and Wilhelmina McToll Shonts.

Mrs. Franks was a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Uniontown and Calvary Church of the Nazarene in California, where she was very active in the choir and teaching Sunday school.

She was retired from Brownsville Hospital as a nursing assistant and unit clerk, after 28 years of service.

Surviving are a daughter, Rebecca (Gary) Livingston of Coal Center; a son, William Richard (Patricia) Bennett of Hayden, Colo.; a stepson, Earl (Rosie) Franks Jr. of Uniontown; a stepdaughter, Karen Zane of Uniontown; a sister, Olive Jean Humphries; grandchildren William and Brandie Bennett and Tara Livingston; great-grandchildren Jillian and Hailey Bennett; stepgrandchildren Jennifer and Jeff Zane; stepgreat-grandchildren Robert, Taylor and Kellen Zane; several nieces and nephews; and a lifelong friend, Dorothy Stull.

In addition to her parents, deceased are her first husband, William J. Bennett; second husband Earl Franks Sr.; and several brothers and sisters.

Owner of Hassett Hardwood Flooring

Nathan J. Hassett, 37, of Jefferson, died Saturday, December 7, 2013.

He was born September 26, 1976, in Pittsburgh, a son of James and Linda Dilla Hassett of Jefferson.

Mr. Hassett was a 1995 graduate of Jefferson-Morgan High School and a 2001 graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity.

He was the owner and operator of Hassett Hardwood Flooring in Jefferson.

Mr. Hassett enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, football and Penguins hockey.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his fiancée, Erica Gray; a brother, Jeremy Hassett and wife Brenda of Pittsburgh; a sister, Rebecca Hassett and fiancé Adam Faricellie of Rockville, Md.; maternal grandmother Joan Dilla of Pittsburgh; paternal grandmother Lois Hassett of Pittsburgh; two nieces, Evangeline and Aria Hassett; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Deceased are his maternal grandfather, Raymond Dilla, and paternal grandfather James T. Hassett.

Retired steelworker was WWII veteran

Charles W. Kinkopf, 92, of Benton, Ill., formerly of Claysville, died Thursday, December 5, 2013.

He was a retired steelworker for Universal Cyclops in Bridgeville for 33 years.

Mr. Kinkopf proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Germany, Italy and North Africa.

After retiring, he enjoyed woodworking, traveling and working on his farm.

He was a devoted husband and family man and was married for 65 years to Helen Wanczak Kinkopf, who is deceased. Also deceased are his daughter, Martha Blair; a son-in-law, David Smith; and a great-grandson, Marquin Williams.

Surviving are his children, Susan Smith of Claysville, Claudia (Joe) Rizor of Benton and Charles J.T. Kinkopf of Pittsburgh; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 11, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Claysville, followed by burial in Claysville Cemetery.

Loving mother, grandmother

Jacquelyn Jo “Jackie” Mosier Smith, 76, of Washington, died unexpectedly Friday, December 6, 2013.

She was born August 15, 1937, in Washington, a daughter of the late Paul Wayne Mosier and Bonnie Isabelle Dutton Mosier.

Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Trinity High School, Class of 1955.

She worked at The Meadows in track photography sales, Club Forty as a cook, state police as a teletypist and in admissions for Washington & Jefferson College.

Mrs. Smith enjoyed canning, gardening, socializing with friends and taking bus trips. She was very active in the Washington County Fair and Trinity Band Parent Organization and was a Girl Scout and 4-H leader.

She was a member of North Buffalo Church, Moose Lodge, Lagonda Homemakers Club, a Parkinson’s disease group and Washington Socialites.

Mrs. Smith was a loving mother and grandmother and wonderful friend to many. She loved her pets.

On June 27, 1964, she married Robert Bradford Smith, who died November 6, 2009.

Surviving are three daughters, Bonnie (Benjamin) Rankin of Chelmsford, Mass., Tracy (Michael) Tush of Washington and Rebecca (Joseph) Kolter of Washington; and three grandchildren, Laura Rankin, Alex Tush and Jason (Erin) Kolter.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 12, in North Buffalo Church, 711 Rural Valley Road, Washington, with Pastor Gary Gibson officiating. Burial will be private and at a later date.

Delivery driver was longtime foster parent

Carl Douglas Smouse, 69, of Waynesburg, died at 4:15 p.m. Sunday, December 8, 2013, in his home.

He was born Sunday, March 26, 1944, in Waynesburg, a son of the late Vernon Lee Smouse and Blanche Fordyce Smouse.

Mr. Smouse was a member of St. George Episcopal Church in Waynesburg and was affiliated with Whiteley Creek Community Church of Waynesburg.

He enjoyed farming.

Mr. Smouse was a member of Waynesburg Moose Lodge 461 and a 40-year member of East Franklin Grange 1709. He was also a member of Greene County Foster Parents Association, Pennsylvania State Family Resource Association and Greene County Farm Bureau. He and his wife were foster parents to more than 300 children.

He worked as a delivery driver for the former Bryan’s Dairy in Waynesburg and later for United Ohio Valley Dairy, retiring in 2006.

Surviving are his wife, Bonnie J Makel Smouse, whom he married November 26, 1966; a daughter, Rebecca (Jason) Smith of Waynesburg; five sons, Kevin Michael (Kristin) Smouse of Ridgeley, W.Va., Jeffrey Alan (Michaelle) Smouse of Alexandria, Va., Frank Douglas (Amanda) Smouse of Waynesburg, Jonathan Smouse of Ohio and David Michael Smouse, at home; 10 grandchildren, Taylor Smith, Kyle Smith, Jenna Smith, Kolton Smouse, Karson Smouse, Joan Smouse, Annabelle Smouse, Barrett Patterson, Brianna Wyatt and Antonio Wyatt; a sister, Barbara Faddis of Rices Landing; and several nieces and nephews.

Also surviving is a special friend, Gretchen Hoge Rushing.

Deceased are two brothers, Jack Warren Smouse and Theodore Garvin Smouse.

Jane Wiencek Taylor, 92, of Venice, Fla., formerly of Canonsburg, passed away Wednesday, December 4, 2013.

Surviving are daughter Rebecca George and son Gary Taylor.

Longtime health care employee loved gambling

Brenda Elaine Sandlin Willkomm of Baldwin Borough died Sunday, December 8, 2013.

She was the beloved wife of Robert E.; daughter of the late Layton “Jack” and Barbara Sandlin; sister of Joyce Kathryn (George) Scott of Waynesburg; and aunt of David Layton Scott and Meagan Elaine Scott, both of New York, N.Y.

She was a graduate of Median School of Allied Health Careers and worked for more than 30 years in the health care field. She loved gambling, playing cards, her trips to Indiana and her loving and faithful dog, Lizzie.

Visitation and services are private at the request of the family.
