S. Evelyn Athey, 85, of Hickory, died Monday, December 16, 2013, in Canonsburg Hospital.

She was born June 9, 1928, in Mt. Pleasant Township, a daughter of J. Lawrence and A. Thelma Rumbaugh Cowden.

Mrs. Athey was a graduate of Hickory High School and graduated from Washington Hospital School of Nursing at age 18.

Mrs. Athey was a registered nurse for Morganza and St. Clair, Westmoreland and Washington hospitals, retiring from Washington Hospital in 1985.

She was member of Hickory United Evangelical Presbyterian Church, where she was active in the Sunday school class, Meals on Wheels and quilting.

Mrs. Athey was an avid card player and belonged to several local bridge and 500 card clubs.

She was a former member of Chartiers Chapter 97 Order of the Eastern Star, Canonsburg.

On October 2, 1948, she married James B. “J.B.” Athey, who died May 16, 1988.

Surviving are three children, James C. Athey (Anna) of Georgetown, Del., John Perry Baker Athey (Janis) of Greensburg and Janet Lynn Kramer (David) of Hickory; eight grandchildren, Mandy Swain (David), Mintie Athey, Hud Athey (Jenn), Lauren Penrose (Darren), Katy Doerschner (Chris), Alyson Athey, Patrick Kramer (Kelly) and Brent Kramer (Beth); nine great-grandchildren, Daniel, Braeden and Meoghan Swain, Page Athey, Carter and Aubrey Penrose and Brody, Addison and Hunter Kramer; a sister, Belva White of Mercer; and two brothers, William E. Cowden (Lois) of Washington and Russell Cowden (Phyllis) of Prosperity.

Deceased are three sisters, Ila Mae Snyder, Nancy Schmidt and Lois King; and two brothers, Joseph L. and Alvin Cowden.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, owner/supervisor, 27 Cherry Avenue Houston, PA 15342. Additional visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m., the time of service, Saturday, December 21, in Hickory United Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Hickory. The Rev. Stuart Broberg will officiate. Interment will follow in Mt. Prospect Cemetery, Hickory. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Hickory United E.P.C., 210 Main Street, P.O. Former Washington resident enjoyed her dogs

Jean H. Clemens, 90, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., formerly of Washington, died Saturday, December 14, 2013.

She was born November 12, 1923, in Washington, a daughter of Adam Hoffman and Frances M. McCool Hoffman.

Mrs. Clemens first worked for the water company in Washington for 15 years, then RCA Corp. in Florida from the 1960s to the 1980s. In addition, she was campaign supervisor for Arthritis Foundation of West Palm Beach for 20 years.

She loved spending time with her granddaughter and enjoyed her dogs and playing bingo.

On July 1, 1949, she married William J. Clemens, who died January 27, 1986.

Surviving are two daughters, Mary Jo Rose (Tom) of Tarpon Springs, Fla. and Billie Jean Pellett (Skip) of Palm Beach Gardens; and a granddaughter, Shelby Jane Pellett.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where a blessing service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, December 20, with Father Thomas P. O’Neil officiating. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery.

I.C. Church member loved mowing grass

Peter A. “Pete” Cossu, 81, of Washington, died at 5:40 a.m. Monday, December 16, 2013, in Washington Hospital.

He was born October 18, 1932, in Washington, a son of the late Anthony and Louise E. Canterna Cossu.

Mr. Cossu was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and was a graduate of Immaculate Conception High School.

He enjoyed mowing grass, riding on his John Deere tactor, woodworking, birdwatching, fishing and camping. Mr. Cossu enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. They were very special to him. He was self-employed for more than 40 years as a cleaning contractor for his company, Cossu Cleaning, from where he retired.

Mr. Cossu served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955, receiving the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

On November 29, 1958, he married Jo Ann Moore, who survives.

Also surviving are his children, David (Tina) Cossu of Louisville, Ky., Carol (Casey) Cossu-Harris of Prosperity and Mark (Maria) Cossu of Venetia; a brother; John “Sam” (Charlene) Cossu of Cleveland; a sister, Mary Sargent of Washington; five grandchildren, Tyler (Sonya) Harris, Jordan Harris, Samantha Harris, Peter A. Cossu and Constantina N. Cossu; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Cossu.

Friends will be received from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Warco-Falvo Funeral Home Inc., Wilson at E. Katherine avenues, Washington, S. Timothy Warco, supervisor/director, Susan Falvo Warco, director, S. Timothy Warco II, director. A prayer service will be held at noon Friday, December 20, in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 1 p.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 119 West Chestnut Street, Washington. Burial will follow in Immaculate Conception Church Cemetery, Washington.

John F. Duda Sr., 67, of Coal Center, died Tuesday, December 17, 2013, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born in North Charleroi, on December 3, 1946, a son of Margaret A. Marconyak Duda, who survives and resides in Rostraver Township and the late Chester A. Duda Sr.

Mr. Duda worked for Operating Engineers Local 66 and was a member of Mary, Mother of the Church in Charleroi. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and hating the world. His biggest interest was his grandchildren.

In addition to his mother, surviving are his wife, Linda I. McCall Duda; four children, Charlotte Duda of Coal Center, John F. (Rebecca) Duda Jr. of San Antonio, Texas, Rachel (Mark) Abel of Fallowfield Township and Matthew A. (Nicole) Duda of Pittsburgh; and five grandchildren, Cecilia Duda, Sophia Duda, Lillian Duda, Caroline Abel and Noah Mast; three brothers, Chester A. Duda Jr. of Rostraver, Joseph J. Duda of Mt. Morris and Michael J. Duda of Rostraver and three sisters, Julie (Robert) Malena of Rostraver, Margaret (Robert) Scharback of Long Island, N.Y. and Cathy (Borhan) Karimi of Virginia.

William Leonard Henderson, 54, of Waynesburg, died Tuesday, December 17, 2013, in his home. Arrangements are incomplete and being handled by Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Home Inc., Waynesburg. A complete obituary will appear in a later edition.

Beverly “Jean” Lambright, 85, of Washington, formerly of Holbrook, died Tuesday, December 17, 2013.

Owner of McClure Construction Co.

Robert B. “Bob” McClure, 78, of McMurray, died Sunday, December 15, 2013, surrounded by his loving family, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh.

He was born June 3, 1935, in Hackett, a son of the late Benjamin and Ruth Wessel McClure.

Mr. McClure owned and operated McClure Construction Co. in Venetia and was a former industrial arts teacher at Canon-McMillan High School.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

At the time of his death, he was an elder of Center Presbyterian Church in McMurray. He also served as president of the board of Finleyville Cemetery Co. and as a director of the Walter P. Chrysler Club. He was founding president of Peters Township Quarterback Club and was a member of American Legion Post 613 in Finleyville and Lodge 297 F&AM in Canonsburg.

Surviving are his wife, Jane Patsch McClure; two sons, Robert Scott McClure and wife Allison and Douglas Irwin McClure, both of Venetia; a daughter, Kathleen DeLuca and husband David of McMurray; seven grandchildren, Ben, Alexa, Dan, Brad, Will, Marshall and Cassi; and two nieces.

He also will be sadly missed by his golden retriever, Buddy.

Deceased is a sister, Constance Noll.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Kegel Funeral Home Inc., Tim P. Kegel, supervisor, 3560 Washington Avenue, Finleyville.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Center Presbyterian Church, McMurray, with the Rev. Donald Austin officiating. Everyone please meet at the church Friday morning. Interment will follow in Finleyville Cemetery.

Formerly of Weirton, W.Va.

William E. Phillips, 68 plus one day, of Buford, Ga., formerly of Weirton, W.Va., was surrounded by his family when he went to be with the Lord Monday, December 16, 2013.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy Garceau Phillips, along with other family members.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 until the time of service at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 21, in Kepner Funeral Home, 166 Kruger Street, 304-242-2311.

Marcella “Marcie” Los Trout, 76, of Fredericktown, died Tuesday, December 17, 2013, in Washington Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Greenlee Funeral Home, 42 Bank Street at Crawford Road, Fredericktown.

Owned several horses at The Meadows

Beloved mother and friend, Sondra Marie Weimer, 69, passed away on November 20, 2013, in Halifax Memorial Hospital, Daytona Beach, Fla., with her family at her side.

She was born October 27, 1944, in Lansing, Mich., daughter of Nick Kent and Winneford Burns.

On February 24, 1962, she married the love of her life, Kenneth C. Weimer, and together raised their two children, Ken and Lorrie in Prosperity.

Mr. and Mrs. Weimer celebrated 51 wonderful years of marriage.

For more than 30 years, she and her family owned and cared for several horses that raced at The Meadows.

She enjoyed fishing, taking trips, the beach and spending time with her family.

They moved to Florida in 2009 to enjoy their many hobbies.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a son, Ken Weimer and wife Tami; a daughter, Lorrie Eddy and husband Dennis; four grandchildren, Page Weimer, and Natalie, David and Montana Emrock; and a great-grandson, Braden Bedillion.

Also surviving are a sister, Melina Pattison; a brother, Tommy Horton; and two nieces; and three nephews.

The family is planning to celebrate her life at a date to be determined.
