S. Evelyn Athey

S. Evelyn Athey, 85, of Hickory, died Monday, December 16, 2013, in Canonsburg Hospital.

She was born June 9, 1928, in Mt. Pleasant Township, a daughter of J. Lawrence and A. Thelma Rumbaugh Cowden.

Mrs. Athey was a graduate of Hickory High School and graduated from Washington Hospital School of Nursing at age 18.

Mrs. Athey was a registered nurse for Morganza and St. Clair, Westmoreland and Washington hospitals, retiring from Washington Hospital in 1985.

She was member of Hickory United Evangelical Presbyterian Church, where she was active in the Sunday school class, Meals on Wheels and quilting.

Mrs. Athey was an avid card player and belonged to several local bridge and 500 card clubs.

She was a former member of Chartiers Chapter 97 Order of the Eastern Star, Canonsburg.

On October 2, 1948, she married James B. “J.B.” Athey, who died May 16, 1988.

Surviving are three children, James C. Athey (Anna) of Georgetown, Del., John Perry Baker Athey (Janis) of Greensburg and Janet Lynn Kramer (David) of Hickory; eight grandchildren, Mandy Swain (David), Mintie Athey, Hud Athey (Jenn), Lauren Penrose (Darren), Katy Doerschner (Chris), Alyson Athey, Patrick Kramer (Kelly) and Brent Kramer (Beth); nine great-grandchildren, Daniel, Braeden and Meoghan Swain, Page Athey, Carter and Aubrey Penrose and Brody, Addison and Hunter Kramer; a sister, Belva White of Mercer; and two brothers, William E. Cowden (Lois) of Washington and Russell Cowden (Phyllis) of Prosperity.

Deceased are three sisters, Ila Mae Snyder, Nancy Schmidt and Lois King; and two brothers, Joseph L. and Alvin Cowden.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, owner/supervisor, 27 Cherry Avenue Houston, PA 15342. Additional visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m., the time of service, Saturday, December 21, in Hickory United Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Hickory. The Rev. Stuart Broberg will officiate. Interment will follow in Mt. Prospect Cemetery, Hickory. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Hickory United E.P.C., 210 Main Street, P.O. Box 97, Hickory, PA 15340; City Mission, 84 West Wheeling Street, Washington, PA 15301; or American Cancer Society, 331 South Main Street, Washington, PA 15301.
