Served in Navy, enjoyed Croatian music

Nicholas J. Bockovich, 82, of Dunnellon, Fla., formerly of Eighty Four, died Friday, December 27, 2013. in Ocala, Fla.

He was born September 16, 1931, in Litchfield, Ill., a son of the late Steve and Mary Bockovich.

Mr. Bockovich had served with the U.S. Navy. He was a graduate of Indiana Tech.

Prior to retirement, he was a sales representative for Keer Engineering and Sales.

He was a Florida resident since 2000.

Mr. Bockovich was a former member of St. Patrick Church of Canonsburg. He was a proud member of Croatian Fraternal Union Lodge 354 of Cokeburg.

He enjoyed Croatian music and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

His wife, Joyce Marie Glor Bockovich, died May 13, 1999.

Surviving are four sons, Eric Bookmiller (Marge) of Norwich, Conn., Roy Bookmiller (Mur) of Sylvania, Ohio, Robert Bookmiller (Rae) of Finleyville and Nicholas Bockovich Jr. of Dunnellon; two daughters, Susan Boczar of Winchester, Va., and Mary Bockovich of Canonsburg; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and seven nieces and a nephew.

Deceased are a brother, Steve Bockovich; a sister, Mildred Bockovich; and a granddaughter, Amy Bookmiller.

Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Sollon Funeral Home Ltd., 30 East College Street, Canonsburg, J. David Sollon, supervisor, Phillip L. Sollon, director, where departing prayers will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday, December 30, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick Church.Interment will follow in the Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Peters Township.

Avella resident

Anthony “Wayne” Dzikowski, 69, of Avella, formerly of Canonsburg, died suddenly Tuesday, December 24, 2013.

He was the beloved husband of Kathleen E. Dzikowski; father of John (Elana) Dzikowski; grandfather of Celena, Connie and Aleasha; son of the late Anthony J. and Helen C.; and brother of the late David (surviving spouse Donna) Dzikowski and Eleanor Buyan.

Friends will be received from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, December 29, in Joseph M. Somma Funeral Home Inc., 5405 Steubenville Pike, Moon Run, Robinson Township. Interment will be private in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Township.

Served in National Guard

Kenneth W. Felton, 71, of Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Canonsburg, passed away Monday, December 16, 2013, in Jacksonville.

He was born July 19, 1942, a son of Kenneth Felton of Canonsburg and the late Mary Yanosik Felton.

Mr. Felton was an interior designer and worked in furniture sales and management for most of his life.

He was a member of ASID, American Society of Interior Designers and Elks Club.

Mr. Felton had worked for The Hub in Steubenville, Ohio, and Hills Department Stores in West Virginia.

He served in the National Guard.

Mr. Felton was Catholic.

Surviving, in addition to his father, are daughter, Jennifer (Scott) Snyder of Jacksonville; a grandson, Noah; a brother, Greg (Rhonda) Felton of Houston; a nephew; two nieces; a great-nephew; other relatives; and a good friend, Harrirs Reservitz of Jacksonville.

He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Deceased, in addition to his mother, are a son, Kenneth Lee Felton.

Former Roscoe police chief, WWII vet

Elijah T. Gauden Jr., 85, of Roscoe, passed away peacefully Thursday, December 26, 2013, in St. Clair Hospital, Mt. Lebanon.

He was born March 16, 1928, in Rosedale, a son of the late Elijah T. and Jessie David Gauden Sr.

While a resident of Roscoe, he was a member of Roscoe United Methodist Church and served as chief of police in Roscoe for 28 years, as well as serving on the Roscoe Street Commission for 30 years. He also served as the last chief of police in Newell, was a deputy sheriff with the Washington County, and worked in the security division of Hamot Hospital in Erie.

In 1974, he proudly graduated third in his class from the Pennsylvania State Police Academy. He retired in 1990 from the New Haven Terminal in Connecticut, as an inventory specialist.

Mr. Gauden was a World War II veteran, proudly serving his country in the U.S. Army Air Forces.

Left to cherish the many wonderful memories are five daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and John Palfrey, Bonnie and Bill Hotz, Janet and Wayne Cox, Bridget Gauden and Denise and Jerry Fink; three sons, Samuel, Gary and James Gauden; 17 grandchildren, Robert and Shawn McGarry, Pamela Drylie, Heather and Neil Palfrey, Sarah Anderson, Steven and William Hotz Jr., Kellie Goodman, Kenneth Jacobs, Katie Stankus, Steven, Justin, Michael and Matthew Gauden and Justin and Amey Fink; 12 great-grandchildren, Jeffrey, Michael, Keenan, Caitlyn and Liam McGarry, Courtney and Jeremy Drylie, Nicole, Varian, James, Cohen and Cooper Hotz; three great-great-grandchildren, Oliver, Jonas and Peyton McGarry; three brothers, Ira, Albert and Sidney Gauden; and a son-in-law, Robert McGarry.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Margaret Bell Gauden; daughter Wanda McGarry; granddaughter Carrie Ann; brothers Houston, James and George Gauden; and sisters Anna Marie Gordon and Jessie Watkins.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Melenyzer-DuBarr Funeral Homes, 1008 Furlong Avenue, Roscoe, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, December 30, with Pastor Brian Carroll presiding. Interment will follow in Howe Cemetery, Coal Center. American Legion Post 801 will conduct their service at 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.

Washington Steel retiree served in Marine Corps

George W. Gift, of Washington, passed away Wednesday, December 25, 2013, in his home, after a lengthy illness.

He was born August 12, 1930, in Brackenridge, a son of George L. and Julia Eurich Gift.

Mr. Gift was a 1948 graduate of Tarentum High School, and later from Washington & Jefferson College.

He worked for Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation. In 1963, he was employed by Washington Steel Corporation, and retired after 30 years as chief chemist.

Mr. Gift joined the U.S. Marine Corps, having served eight years as both active and active reserve capacities. While in the Marine Corps, he attended schools in chemical and biological warfare. He became and instructor and a demolition expert. He received the Korean Service Medal, National Defense Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in January 1960.

He was a life member of U.S. Marine Corps League, Washington County Detachment 1138, life member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks Lodge 776 and American Legion Post 175. He also was a member of American Chemical Society and Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh.

Mr. Gift enjoyed helping with Toys for Tots for several years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family.

On May 15, 1954, he married Jacqueline N. Drum, who survives.

Also surviving are three children, Susan R. (Samuel) Insana of Fishersville, Va., Elizabeth A. (Jack) Scarborough of Washington and Dr. William D. (Karen) Gift of Waynesboro; 10 grandchildren, Kristen (Michael) Stedman, Ryan (Michelle) Insana, Marc (Ashley) Insana, Megan (Jesse) DuPerow, Adam and Alex Scarborough, Jennifer (Patrick) Mayer, Macklyn, Madison and Cameron Gift; five great-grandchildren, Hanna, Jacob and Anthony Stedman and Isabella and Lillian PuPerow; and a sister, B. Jane (James) Nealer.

Deceased is a sister, Virginia (James) Polosky.

Friends will be received from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the Hummell and Jones Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, Thomas W. Hummell, supervisor, Douglas M. Jones, director, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 30, with the Rev. Ruth Simmons officiating. Interment will follow in Washington Cemetery. Pittsburgh resident

Feno Edward Monaco, 66, of Pittsburgh, died Tuesday, December 24, 2013

His wife, Margaret, and children Joey Lynn and Feno Michael, were by his side when he passed peacefully after a prolonged illness.

Also surviving are four siblings and four grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from noon to 3 p.m., the time of a blessing service, Sunday, December 29, in William Slater II Funeral Service, Green Tree.

Mr. Monaco was a man of generous spirit and a kind heart who will be missed by all who knew him.?

Lawrence E. Wainwright, 71, of Rices Landing, died Friday, December 27, 2013.

Arrangements are incomplete and under the direction of Behm Funeral Home Inc., Jefferson. A complete obituary will be published in a later edition.
