John Anthony Maczuzak

1941 – 2013

John Anthony Maczuzak, 72, died suddenly Friday, December 27, 2013, following a brief illness. He last resided in Freedom.

He was born in Ellsworth, son of Peter and Catherine Maczuzak.

An avid athlete, he was awarded a football scholarship in 1959 to attend the University of Pittsburgh, where he also played basketball. He was a member of Pitt’s 1963 famed “No Bowl” football team before being drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs the following year. After one season, he returned to finish his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Pitt, after which he joined the National Works of U.S. Steel in McKeesport.

During his 31 years with U.S. Steel, he held several management positions, including general manager of U.S. Steel Fairless Works in Fairless Hills and vice president of operations of U.S. Steel/Kobe in Lorain, Ohio. He left U.S. Steel in 1996 and soon thereafter was appointed president and chief operating officer of National Steel Corp. at its Mishawaka, Ind., headquarters. He stayed at National Steel until its acquisition by U.S. Steel in 2003, after which he retired to Western Pennsylvania.

His wife of 42 years, Janet Hamilton Maczuzak, is deceased.

Surviving are a daughter, Amy of Pittsburgh; a son, John David, a daughter-in-law, Cindy, and a granddaughter, Kathryn, all of North Huntingdon; and a son, Vern of New York, N.Y.

Also surviving are his companion, Rose Marie Wintermantel; three brothers; four sisters; and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Thompson-Marodi Funeral Home Inc., 809 Main Street, Bentleyville, 724-239-2255, and from 10 to 11 a.m., the hour of a memorial service, Saturday, January 4, in Pigeon Creek United Presbyterian Church, 45 Church Road, Eighty Four, with the Rev. Robert R. Long officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in his memory to a charity of one’s choice.
