Earl M. Sharpnack

Earl M. Sharpnack, 88, of Washington, died Thursday, February 7, 2013, in his home.

He was born September 1, 1924, in Rice’s Landing, a son of the late Earl B. and Nellie Areford Sharpnack.

Mr. Sharpnack was a graduate of Jefferson Morgan High School and Penn Commercial Business School.

He worked as a postal clerk for the Washington Post Office, retiring in 1990.

Mr. Sharpnack was a member of Church of the Covenant, where he served as a deacon, elder, trustee and head usher.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received the American Theater Campaign Medal, European-American Campaign Medal with three bronze stars, Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal.

Mr. Sharpnack was a member of Amerigan Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 for 68 years, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and South Strabane Volunteer Fire Department 2, serving as treasurer. He also served as committeeman with Troop 115 of the Boy Scouts of America.

On June 4, 1949, in Davidson Methodist Church, Glyde, he married Ruth Hathaway. Mrs. Sharpnack survives.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three sons, Dennis (Bonnie) Sharpnack of Claysville, Bruce (Laura) Sharpnack of Hickory and Mark (Rachel) Sharpnack of Pittsburgh; six grandchildren, Heather (Ryan) Hagerman, Brook (Ashley), Clark, William, Adam and Sarah; and a great-grandson, Brady Hagerman.

Deceased are a brother, Thomas Sharpnack; and three sisters, Pauline Wasko, Esther Popovich and Genevieve Tekevac.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday in Piatt & Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 12, in Church of the Covenant, 267 East Beau Street, Washington, with the Rev. Dr. Stuart D. Broberg officiating. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family in the Washington Cemetery. Military Rites will be accorded at graveside by Edwin Scott Linton, Post 175, of the American Legion. The family suggests memorial contributions be directed to Church of the Covenant.
