Samuel J. Insana Sr.
Samuel J. “Sammy” Insana Sr., 80, of Washington, passed away Tuesday, February 12, 2013, surrounded by his loving wife Mary Lou and his four children.
He was born October 14, 1932, in Washington, a son of the late Pietro and Carmella Insana.
Mr. Insana worked at Brockway Glass for 31 years until its closure and then worked at Dynamet Corp. for 12 years before retiring in 1992.
A 1951 graduate of Trinity High School, he enjoyed time spent working in his garden, and he also participated in a variety of team sports including bowling, softball, church league dartball and golf.
He was a lifelong member of St. Hilary Church and volunteered his time in numerous church activities. He was also a member of the Alpine Club, where his father was one of the founders.
On June 6, 1952, he married Mary Lou Lightner, who survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Cheryl (John) Knestrick of Washington; three sons, Peter (Cathy) Insana of Rhode Island, Samuel (Susan) Insana Jr. of Virginia and James (Ann Marie) Insana of Florida; six grandchildren, including three granddaughters, Kristen Stedman, Michelle Myers and Erin Marr, and three grandsons, Ryan, Marc and Craig Insana; six great-grandchildren, Hanna, Jacob and Anthony Stedman, Riley and Samuel Myers and Adeline Marr; a sister, Francis White; two brothers, Peter and Lawrence Insana; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, February 15, in St. Hilary Church, Washington, followed by interment in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, McMurray.
