James H. Garber

James H. “Jim” Garber, 74, of Lusby, Md., formerly of Waynesburg, died September 20, 2012, in his home following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born May 14, 1938, in Waynesburg, a son of the late James Jackson and Louisa Ruth Phillips Garber.

On April 18, 1955, he married Janice Calvert, who passed away February 15, 2007.

He enlisted, at the age of 17, and served in the U.S. Navy for more than 20 years. He was a gunner’s mate on naval destroyers and a Vietnam veteran. He retired in 1974 as a chief petty officer.

After he served our country, he worked for the coal mine before moving to Maryland, where he eventually found his way back to the Navy working first at Cheltenham and later the Navy yard in Washington, D.C., as a federal police officer.

Mr. Garber was a member of American Legion Post 274 in Lusby. He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge Patuxent 2393 and formerly of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge Waynesburg 461. He was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Fleet Reserve.

He enjoyed watching NASCAR, football and was a Steelers and Penn State fan.

Surviving are five children, Pam Thompson of Morgantown, W.Va., James Garber and wife Crystal of Waynesburg, Denise Herrington and husband Keith of Mt. Morris, Philip Garber and wife Melissa of Lusby and Thomas Garber of Waynesburg; 11 grandchildren, Kerri and Billie Jo Thompson, Michael and Nick Garber, Tiffany, Brittany and Whittany Herrington, Savannah and Dale Garber and McKenzie and Jonathan Garber; two great-grandchildren, Laney and Skylar; and two brothers, Charles and wife Rebecca Garber of Waynesburg and Buck and wife Peggy of Lake Worth, Fla.

Deceased are a grandson, Tyler Ray Garber, and two sisters, Nancy Lee Gilbert and Louisa Jane Cumpson-Cohen.

Mr. Garber’s funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, January 18, in Arlington (Va.) National Cemetery, with military honors. Those attending are asked to please meet the family at the administration building by 9:30 a.m. at which time a procession to the ceremonial site will occur. Please join the family following the funeral at American Legion Post 274 in Lusby for a celebration of his life. In lieu of flowers, please send all gifts in his memory to Calvert Hospice, P.O.
